Re: 70 HL washer anti siphon barrel?

The identical "tee with a barrel in it" device was used on 1969 Camaro RS models and non-RS models with RPO CE1 Headlamp Washers, and it's clearly illustrated in the A.I.M. and called out as a "Valve Assy.", which tags it as a check valve. It was used on the main feed hose where it fed the driver's side nozzles, and the passenger side nozzles were fed from the driver's side nozzle tee.

Terry, if you think about it, the valves must perform the purpose of preventing the long supply tube from emptying when not in use, and guarantee that the full tube provides discrete effective "pulses" almost immediately with activation of the washer switch.

It seems you should be able to check the valve by blocking either the upper or lower washer nozzle hose and blowing on the other nozzle hose...if the valve is good you should get no air flow back through the supply hose branch end connection. Blowing on the supply tube branch end should allow flow, but when you stop blowing, you should hear an audible click as the spring loaded check ball reseats. Of course, I am not suggesting this testing technique for performance verification...only for valve diagnosis.

John, the 70 Corvette AIM was my first stop for checking to see if the tee was a valve, and no tee or valve was called out separately. For 70 Corvettes, the valves must have been supplied as an integral part of the washer hose harness.

I tested the valve and results are exactly as you describe.

                        Chuck,
I believe you are correct -- the Tees were supplied as part of the hose assembly.
Just as an aside, I believe those Tee/valves began in October 1969 cars. Before that there are plain Tees in the headlamp washer hoses.

I appreciate your concerns for the appearances some of us try to keep up.

The valve used on the Camaro was P/N 4919503, which was installed by the assembly plant (they made up the hose assembly); the P/N on the valve used on the Corvette may not show up in the A.I.M. if the valve was included as part of a supplier-built hose assembly.
