If you find a balancer that looks like the second photo, but has a ring of holes around the outside diameter, it will work, but it was sold as a service replacement

I did some research on the stepped balancers many years ago. I have about a dozen or so of the balancers shown in my drawings (some with the 12 holes around the perimeter and some without). The balancers that I have are from lower H.P. engines. According to my vintage Chev. parts catalogs the 58-58 PASS., CORVETTE w/F.I. and H.L. Cam used balancer # 3742986 which according to Chevrolet Parts History (service parts) was replaced in Nov. 1959 by GM # 3764318 used on 59-61 PASS., CORVETTE w/H.L. Cam, H/Per. (6 1/8" O.D.).

David.....That's great information and data you've posted. Thanks for sharing that!!!

Bob, If you find one and the rivets are loose, there's a rebuild kit availavle with new rubber insulator and rivets. However you need a hydraulic press and the ability to get a air hammer in there to peen the rivets. But just make sure the inner surface of the snout isn't worn too much. It's a press fit to the crank.

I had one with the outer holes on a mongrel '57 '548 Flint 283 in a buddy's 59 a few years ago that had loose rivets, but the rubber was okay. It actually was rattling. I compressed the balancer in my 20 ton press and took a air hammer with chisel tool to the rivets. Didn't come out exactly pretty but it tightened it up nicely and the pulley covered up the mis-hits. My buddy didn't want to spring a few hundred $'s for a replacement.

Someone in the past put a repair sleeve on the snout, but over the years it got beat on pretty badly. The crank was a mess too. I drilled and tapped the crank for the 7/16"-20 HB bolt to keep it safely installed. Not original for a '59 but it added a margin of confidence so it wouldn't come off. I lost one on my own '59 270hp years ago while driving on the highway, and watched wide-eyed as I saw it in the rearview spinning along and then passing me on the left and ended up in the median. Put a new GM OTC replacement on it.
