New tach cable, distributor rebuilt by J Fiedler, and tach restored by Joe Ray. Tach cable broke into about 4-5 " from the distributor after only 17-18 miles on the car (total frame-off restoration) during a shakedown run. Where do I need to look for the possible source. I only want to pull the cluster out 1 time. Possible cheap cable crap that's on the market?

Re: tach cable broke 67
Al, I assume the inner cable broke. This has nothing to do with a frame off or a tachometer restoration. I had the same problem with my 63. While driving to a Regional to be judged my inner cable broke. Why, I have no idea why.
Anyway, I believe Autozone has an inner cable kit. Part 03368 for $9.99. Do not pull the cluster, reach under and disconnect the tach cable, disconnect at the distributor, pull it out. Measure the old broken part then cut and make a new inner from the kit. Clean the inside of the outer cable, lube the inner and outer and reinstall. You should be good to go.

Re: tach cable broke 67
Make sure the routing of your cable has as gradual and wide radius turns as possible, especially as it approaches the distributor. A tight bend can cause the cable to break. Don't ask me how I know...Don Lowe

Re: tach cable broke 67
Harry, thanks for the info. Didn't realize Autozone carried the cable. Yeah it is the inner. Disconnect from the tach is easier said than done as you are aware, plus I have an A/C duct to also remove (which shouldn't be a problem. What's the best method of cutting the new cable? Thanks, Al- Top

I also have A/C. You need to remove the duct and the hose. You can get the cable disconnected at the tach unless a prior owner wrenched it down. Hand tight is all you need. The kit is self explanatory at what end to cut. Just make your cuts really accurate.

Re: tach cable broke 67
Al,
Just a thought, I think we have the same engine, 67/327/300 isn't it?
If so, maybe the distributor restorer reversed the dimple on the distributor shaft to the rotor position.
If so this would give you an excessive bend in the tach cable.I had a replacement distributor on my car with a dimple reversed to the rotor, and always had problems with the tach cable. When I put my original distributor back on with the dimple aligned to the rotor, there is less bend in the cable, and the problems went away.
Please see the first post in the attached thread:
The first picture in the first thread is the correct position of the distributor (with dimple and rotor aligned) at 6*BTDC. The second picture is with the dimple reversed. As you'll see, there is less bend in the tach cable with the dimple aligned.
Just a thought, I might be all wet for your problem.Jerry Fuccillo

Re: tach cable broke 67
The kits that Jack pointed to are exactly the same, it would be easier to check them out first if there in your area. Also the prices are lower. Just remember that a small washer is needed so use the one that is there now don't discard it.
