cock pit heat/install 64 non A/C heater shut off valve?

My 64 327/365 special high pert car is fully restored. I have an extremely uncomfortable amount of heat coming into the interior. I have all new tunnel insulation, boots, seals, grommets, gaskets, dash insulation, HUSH MAT under the carpet front and back etc. The heater core, box, seals etc are all new. I checked for holes, gaps in the firewall by shinning a light in the interior in a completely pitch dark garage etc.

Can anyone send photos of a heater shut off valve installation on their car? I hate to add something that is not original or stock but I can't stand this heat!!!! If the outside temperature is 75 degrees or higher, I am miserable and so is my passenger. Any thoughts, suggestions etc would greatly be appreciated. If I install a valve, what kind, where to buy it etc? I was thinking of installing it in the 5/8" hose coming from the intake and "hiding" it under the alternator??? If I install this valve to keep the coolant from entering the heater core will this solve my problem?

    Thanks,

    Tim

Tim, just put pipe plugs in the engine in place of your hoses and nipples. You can get them at plumbing supply houses, home improvement and hardware stores. I had same problem with my '57 years ago. It was the heater door not fully closing. After an adjustment it was much better and comfortable. Steve

DO NOT do this with a C2. One of the heater hoses goes to the expansion/overflow tank. On a "heater Delete" the "Tee" at the tank will not have the hose to the heater core, instead, a small rubber cap in installed with the same clamp. The return hose from the heater core is not installed, in you case its removed, and a pipe plug is installed into the engine. Use pipe teflon pipe tape.

Tim, this method will help your situation, but won't eliminate it. I drove my 67 like this for a few years before buying a new heater core. Since thes are now just our summer cars, I see no real need for a heater. Plus there will be enough heat coming into the cabin to keep you warm.
The light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off.

                Larry, Steven and Don,

Thanks a million for all of your help and suggestions! I now have a much better handle on how the heater system works etc. I will explore your suggestions over the next week or so and report back with the results. I think I will start by confirming the heater door is fully closing. Since everythingoutside air to the heater. With this setting, I did not experience ANY radiant heat in the interior! I also tested the defroster duct by pulling it fully out as well as the FAN-TEMP-PULL knob. Everything seemed to work as designed with the exception of the fan making a slight whistling sound on the high setting. Now, so I don't seem like a complete idiot, I HAVE tested all of this before, but I am wondering if I did not have the AIR-PULL-DEF set at the "detent" position. However, I must say the outside temperature yesterday was only 55 degrees and as we all know, that usually makes for a nice cool, comfortable ride anyway vs when the temperature reaches 80 degrees and up. I will test again when we get warmer weather and report back.

                  Tim:

The Chevrolet Service Manual (with 64 supplement) should have excellent troubleshooting and service information, including adjustments. Also a few pictures to help. I know my 1967 service manual does. Suggest getting a service manual if you do not have one already.

To check the heater door adjustments, I suggest that you disconnect the adjustment cable(s) and then you should be able to feel the door closure. Mark this position, and then re-attach and adjust the cable to duplicate. Sometimes you can also hear when the door closes if you listen closely while someone else moves the control knobs/levers.

                  Larry

Tim, there is an adapter made for the purpose of bypassing the heater core. I've had two of them and they were made of stamped brass, 5/8" on one side and 3/4" on the other. One had a 90* bend and the other was straight. This is what you would want to use to bypass the heater core.

However, you know that C2 cockpits are hot by nature, right?

                        Thanks Paul and John,

Do either one of you have a photo of that adapter and how it looks before and after it is installed?

I can't find them right now. I think the 90* walked out of the shop on someone's car long ago, and my son has the straight one. However, I've found some pictures....

They're also available in plastic. Auto parts stores and hardware stares should have them.
