Not complaining ,but has anyone had their carb restored by the Quad shop? I shipped it to Jim last Novemberber. His mailbox is filled and no email answered. I'm not ready for it, just curious if this is the norm. Thanks, Jeff.

Re: 68 Carb Restoration
Jeff,
I have never used the Quad Shop but I think four month waiting and no email answered would send up some pretty sever red flags. I have used Holley several times over the years to rebuild both Rochester and Holley carbs. They can do them to NCRS spec (correct finish, etc) but they're not cheap ($400-$500)Leif

Re: 68 Carb Restoration
Jim was recently married (actually about the time you sent him the carb), so perhaps he has other distractions.
On a more serious note he is expected at an Illinois Chapter tech session around the closing days of this month. If no one else does, I will ask about his turn-around time.Terry- Top

image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgThank you Leif and Terry. Looking at past threads I took your advise Terry and went with Jim. He happened to answer his phone today. Very nice to talk with. He came across a problem and was going to call me. He says my base plate is a Carter not a Rochester. He explained a few things to identify a Carter. I looked at the base plate on my 68 L79 Survivor and it too has a C on top. On the drivers side in the rear it has a circle with the numbers 7034923. I'm curious about this plate also.68 L79 Convertible: Triple Black: Work In Progress, Body off. Now on!

Re: 68 Carb Restoration
Since Carter manufactured Quadrajets as well, is this supposed to be a problem?
I would not be shocked to see the base plates and main bodies intermixed if there was a supply issue. However, I've not previously paid attention.

Re: 68 Carb Restoration
I also have not noted this 'feature,' but as Patrick pointed out some Q-Jets were built by Carter. Those built by Carter say so on the driver's side of the main body. 'Rochester Q-Jet built by Carter' is about the wording. The date code on Carter built Q-Jets is a letter for the month and a single number for the year. (See page 58 of the 4th Edition 1968-69 TIM&JG) I would not expect to find Carter parts on a Rochester built carburetor, nor would I expect to find Rochester made parts on a Carter built unit. My belief is that the carburetor parts were made and assembled by the respective manufacturers and shipped as complete units to St Louis. There is much more to the Rochester/Carter carburetor story, but it is not pertinent to your situation.Terry- Top

Jeff------
7034923 is a Rochester Division part number but it's not a number that was ever assigned to a finished part. So, it may be a casting number or a component part of an assembly. By the way, Carter-manufactured Q-Jet carbs and components thereof carried Rochester part numbers. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 68 Carb Restoration
Joe,
I too am interested in knowing more about the number on the base. My carburetor also has a number on the driver side rear with the number 1400006 in the shape of a small circle. It is a 72 Rochester built quadrajet.
Any input would be of interest.

Jeff------
It's a Rochester Division part number but it's not a number for a finished part or one that was ever available in SERVICE under this number. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 68 Carb Restoration
1400006 is not a Rochester part number or, as far as I can tell, any GM part number associated with a carburetor. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 68 Carb Restoration
I just looked at several Quadrajets in my collection, all of the early 70s vintage and many untouched. Most of the Rochester-manufactured Quadrajets had the C on the base plate as you show in your photo. Ironically, the Carter ones did not.
I would suggest that the letter C on the base plate has no relationship to who made the body of the carb, and may have no relationship to Carter.
I would use the base plate you have, as per my several carbs it would be correct.

Re: 68 Carb Restoration
Jeff,
I also have a few 1968 Quadra-Jet Carb's in stock and all have the same Markings. 7034923 is CORRECT base plate for 1968 Corvette. I studied these carburetors for years. Be careful who you allow to touch your Original Parts. LOL
