My point about the grind marks on your head, the one posted in the thread above above, and the water pump mentioned is that those are no big deal. They are for the purpose you cite, and I imagine that is a very large and obviously coarse wheel. Control may be not so easy, especially towards the end of a ten hour shift.

That 'A' almost looks like it could be random scratches -- but then again maybe not. A couple of other plugs would settle that one.

FYI Cast iron castings had the flash ground by hand on a large grinding wheel & aluminum castings were ground on a big belt sander. As I said both Iron & aluminum was HAND ground so it depended how hard the were pushed into the grinder as to how much metal was removed. It is not a fun job to do especially on heave iron castings. Heave Iron castings were ground on a swing arm grinding wheel. PS the entrance gates were broken off on iron castings & were sawed off on aluminum castings.

Well if it's random, it's present on all 4 ends of this set. Pic is of one end of the other head. Seems to me this was discussed a few years ago. Is it not mentioned in the JG ?

Also shows more grinding detail, as well as the machining marks of the flat face; and the H and C stampings which might be inspector stampings (hydro pressure test ?).

Certainly not random marks there Wayne. As I said, more examples would settle it. To the best of my knowledge (off the top of my head without looking it up) it is not mentioned in the 1968-69 TIM&JG. Just another item to add to the next up-date

Recently saw a nice Lemans blue L89 for sale in PA, lots of paper-work, High 60's price.

              Re: Engine Pad - 1968 L89 Opinions

Thank you for all of your responses to this Engine Stamp. I fee it is a re-stamp and I just wanted some opinions of the much more experienced and knowledgeable members here.

As far as the L89 in the North East, this is that car. I definitely had my suspicions, since they have 2 L89s for sale, and this car is a convertible, but cheaper priced.

I will continue my search for a nice L89, and will let you know if I find anything good.

Thank you again for all of your replies,

              Steve

Terry -- in NCRS Restorer, Summer 1991, Roger Gibson has an excellent 3-page article on the 392's, 842's and the 6074's. Good pic of the end of an '842 head showing the aluminum plug with the (A?) marking as well as casting flash grinds, and the "H" and "C" inspection stamps.

What about the 55 cocked forward and the 4 upright in the vin? Is that usual?
