I'm with you on the DOT thingy beginning on 1/1/68 but, the prominent Load Range B thingy, I thought, began later.

Uniroyal (previously U.S. Royal) tires were made in Detroit, and had such a bad reputation in the 60's that some customers would refuse delivery of a new car if it had Uniroyal tires on it, and dealers had to replace them from another car from any of the other tire companies, all of which were based in Akron, Ohio.

It got to the point that on a customer-ordered unit, the dealer would note on the order form "No Uniroyal Tires", and when the broadcast form printed out in the plant, there was a note at the bottom that said "Akron Tires Only" (tire company name was never mentioned on the printed GM document). This was very common - we saw them all day long.

'had a friend in the AF who was an engineer for Firestone in the late 60's (Then he got a letter from the President.). He told me at the time U.S. Royal was responsible for a lot of Firestone's business.
