    Re: Yom

In Ohio, you pay a one time fee for Historic Plates (car must be at least 25 years old) and then pay another one time fee to register your YOM plates. You just have to keep the Historic Plates & Registration in the car. I store mine in the jack compartment behind the passenger seat. No stickers, no more fees, pretty simple.

      Re: Yom

Ohio is very good to old car owners.
First you apply for historical plates for your 25 Year old (plus) car, cost roughly $25.00.
Then find a set of YOM plates, if they are in decent original shape leave them alone, if they need restoring find out what color the DMV requires.
The color is the original color scheme.
Take the plates to the DMV, pay the $5.00 fee and the YOM registration is good for 50, yes FIFTY years.
As Phil White stated, no more fees, no stickers, no taxes, what a deal.
I have them on all 4 of my cars.

in colorado you must take the plates in to make sure they are still readable - there is no charge to have them registered - you must carry the vintage plates in the car at all times - i have a 1976 stingray - 1976 turns out to be colorado's centennial year - really neat looking ( red - white - blue ) - my son in law has a 1972 - i found a set of plates for his...

I believe this is the same in North Carolina. One advantage to owning a standard registered plate is that there are no mileage or driving restrictions.

In Minnesota, soon after I bought my '61 in 1988, I found a pair of good quality plates at a swap meet. They were 1960 plates with a blue metal tab with the numbers 61 that went over the 60 digits. This is how Minnesota updated their plates back in the fifties and sixties. I took them to the local motor vehicle registration office and they ran them through the computer to ensue that the numbers were not in use. I paid my $25 fee and put them on the car. I later received a card showing the plates were registered to my car.

Yeah, Ohio is great since you only have to worry about renewing registration for historic cars very 50 years. I love that. Now, if we could just lose the daggone front license plate requirement!!! Here's my 1970...

Italy has had a front plate requirement since the 50's, but the Italians have a good sense of automotive design; their plates are vacuum-formed molded plastic, and the front plate is less than 1/4 the size of the rear plate (it's only 2" high). These are from a 1968 Ferrari 330GTC I imported from Turin (Torino) in 1971 (the upper one is in a chrome die-cast frame).

Dennis, you mean like this? Here's my 67 convertible, just earned Duntov last July in Hampton, VA. At the time, the car was wearing a PAIR of original, 1967 Minnesota Dealer license plates. And yes, these plates are registered with MN DMV. And they are even red to match the car. Now the car only wears the rear YOM plate, as the Duntov plate is on the front.

                          Re: Yom

I've gone through the YOM process twice in California for my '66 coupe and convertible and it was pretty effortless. I sourced the plates on Ebay ($100-150), called the Cal DMV number to determine if they were clear before paying for the plates, and bought genuine 66 tags ($40-60) from a trusted source on Ebay. I painted them but did not clearcoat them until after they were approved and I got my tags from the DMV HQ to avoid any overrestoration claim. It took about 4 weeks. A few pieces of advice: (i) make sure the plates are clear (meaning they are not being used) before you commit to buy the plates - there's a number at Cal DMV you can call for this info; (ii) there are websites that give you the approximate dates they used various starting letter series here in California if you really want an authentic looking plate and number (California used a three letter three number sequence at the time - they started with AAA 123 in '63 and ended with the Z's in '69); (iii) make sure you go to a DMV office that is familiar with the YOM program and the clerk has done it before (the first time I got a pro who breezed thru it but the second I got a newbie who really struggled and had to consult supervisors multiple times) Thousand Oaks DMV office is great for this, (iv) put the '66 (in my case) tags on before you step up to the counter, (v) have the clerk take a Xerox of the plates and have that be attached to the DMV paperwork that they sent to the state capital. All in all it was about $150-200 per car for a vintage look that adds that extra measure of authenticity.
