      Re: Yom

in Louisiana, YOM is one time $33.00 fee with no inspection required. Plate can transfer to new owner and stay with car. License plate must be original and undamaged. i have YOM on several classics and is a nice touch without ever needing renewing... i am a member of the ALPCA (American License Plate Collectors Association) and you can't imagine the big hobby / market collecting, trading and displaying license plates of all types around the world....

In Dec 2013 I went in completely prepared for both my 67& 69. Did a lot reading here and CF and the California DMV website. It's all there. 3 weeks later I got approval and new registrations for both. It was almost too easy, btw I did mine in Pasadena. Good luck

In Illinois you may display the YOM plates as long as the current plates are in the vehicle with registration. No extra fee or registration required.

FWIW, it seems to be fairly easy to register an antique/original plate to your car in Michigan. I was lucky enough to score a restored 1972 plate for my car for $40 at a local swap meet. There's a local guy that has them for most, if not all years, going back to the early 1900's. A little detail on this is that in MI, '72 was one of those years when a metal tab was placed over the '71 plate for renewal. I didn't t want this on my car, so I got a DEALER plate, which to me, adds a little more "character".

Anyway, after buying it with the vendor's assurance that I would be successful in registering it to the car, I bought it. Had to send color photo of the plate to the Secretary of State with a small fee (can't recall how much that was but it wasn't much). Now, I have a vintage plate that has a matching issue date to the model year of the car. The best news in all of this is that there's no renewal fee! I think that for less than $65, I have a great looking vintage plate for life.

If anyone in Michigan is interested in getting one of these for themselves, PM me for the plate vendor's contact information. I'll be happy to share.

              Re: Yom

I wanted to do this in Iowa for a long time. The state finally passed the law about 5 years ago but few know how it works. Your car must be registered as an antique and you must carry the current issued plates in the car. They do nothing with the YOM plates so if they try to run them through the DOT data base you get nothing. Don H.

                Don,

For MI in 1972 it's a sticker, very similar to what's used nowadays. MI gave up the metal add-on corner plate a loooooooong time ago.

Patrick,Sticker, metal -whatever. My point was that I wanted a plate that was clearly and only a 1972 plate vs one that was carry over from an earlier year.

Here in Pa, they went from a tag with the "58" embossed on the plate to a "59" sticker (for passenger cars, I believe that truck plates etc, maybe different). So to do a YOM for 59 and up you get the sticky. On my 59 I have the old purple (really lavender) colored antique plate which apparently is also a collectors item.

In Minnesota, they had new plates for '65 with stickers in '66 and '67. I was only able to find plates with both stickers. Luckily, the ones I did find must have belonged to someone who was a bit anal-retentive, as the stickers were put on dead perfect. (I had passed on pair where it looked like the stickers were applied by a blind man). With judicious use of a heat gun and some Goo-Gone, I was able to remove the '66 sticker (my car is a March '67 build). Given all of this, I wish I would have been clever enough to pursue alternatives, such as the dealer plates mentioned above. I know I would be impressed by a perfectly restored '67 with proper '67 dealer plates.

Not correct about"Don't restore until you've brought old plate to DMV", at least in Mississippi. Opposite is true. You must restore it, THEN submit it to see if it passes.

In South Carolina it's best to take pictures and get it registered, then have it restored. Lot of the guys here have the tag restored to the same color as the car. The general thought if stopped the Highway Patrol young guys doesn't know what color the tag is supposed to be.

In Missouri it's a one time fee (less than $30) for YOM plates and no annual inspections. The car must be 25+ years old. As such the car is considered "historic". A "historic" vehicle may be driven:1. To and from exhibitions and educational events without any mileage limitation.2. To repair facilities within a 100 mile limit.3.Up to 1,000 miles per year for personal use.The owner is responsible for keeping a log of the miles driven for personal use each calendar year. The log must be kept in the vehicle when the vehicle is being driven on any state roads. All that being said, I have a YOM plate on my '66 and have never been stopped or required to present my log. One of the perks of YOM in Missouri is that in 1966 Missouri issued only one plate, to be displayed on the rear of the car, so I can mount (or not mount) an NCRS plate on the front. When selling a historic car with a YOM registration, the new owner may use the YOM license plate on the car if the previous owner provides a relinquishment letter.
