It does not even look real. It looks like the cars are toys yet I know this is real. Unbelievable. Those car owners must be heart broken.

      Walt,
I guess you missed that two were on loan from GM and the rest belonged to the Museum. Now what about those heartbroken owners? Perhaps all of us who are members of the Museum or stockholders in GM qualify.

Indeed Terry, we are all owners in my mind. This is our personal loss too.

I have no inside information, but I bet they get some and maybe all of them out. The only question I see is how badly are they damaged. If they do extract them I would love to watch. Perhaps they will have the web cam back in service by then. I would pay to watch the extraction, and I have seen heavy haulers do some remarkable things with very large and very heavy objects (usually electrical transformers or switches). Cars ought to be a piece of cake for those guys. And vehicle recovery people (high end tow truck operators) can do some pretty remarkable things too. As Wendle Strod said to the local TV reporters: 'This will be interesting.'

I read an article that most all insurance polices in Kentucky are written to exclude sinkhole damage. Anyone know if this is true and the chances this will be covered by insurance?

I would bet this is an "act of God" type thing, would be surprised if insurance covered very much of this damage.

Very true Terry, after seeing several hundreds of tons placed precisely on 10" bolts, I am sure there is equipment to do this. The issue will be getting it inside that place without taking the roof off.

Re: NCM Sink hole swallows display cars

                  Hi all,

After looking at the videos of the actual collapse, it makes me wonder how much time elapsed between when the sinkhole collapsed and the concrete floor collapsed. The void under the floor may have been there earlier. If so, that could have been during visiting hours. But the only thing that makes me think the floor collapse may have only been a short time later, if not simultaneous, is that it looks like the floor was about six inches thick and reenforced with basically fence wire. Better reenforcement and the floor may have only bowed down and held the Corvettes like a net.

Most homeowners policies in Florida have sinkhole exclusions, but I don't think that applies to cars. I believe that auto insurance policies would pay the agreed value for the cars that are considered a total loss. I am glad that no one was hurt... it could have been a real tragedy if the museum was open and the Skydome was occupied with visitors. As a Corvette enthusiast, like all of us, I hope they can extract most of the cars and repair the damage. Once the museum has been repaired or rebuilt, they should make a special display for the survivors of the 2-12-14 Skydome sinkhole disaster. It's just incredible that this happened at that exact location. Playing the odds on this wacky Wednesday, perhaps 6 of my lottery numbers will show up on the same line tonight??

I've seen the pics on Utube and I have hopes that some of Corvette restoration people can repair them. They have done this with barn finds, so why not sink holes.
they are a 501C3, so it sounds like a good write off for the tax man. It sounds like another fund raiser to me. We'll have to wait and see. I wish the NCM the best of luck.

It's a bit unfair to make that claim. At the time of construction, there may have been nothing there to be detected.

I am sure the floors were poured to building codes in place at the time of construction. The occurrence of a sinkhole opening beneath a building in this area is extremely rare. This particular instance happens to involve a location with which we are all very familiar.
