It may be hard to see but the diamond pattern stops short of the chrome tip by about 1/8" where the earlier black and chrome designs have the diamond right up to the chrome. The pattern itself is sharper in the earlier designs and the corners are sharper. The all black is manufactured differently in that it is essentially molded as one piece. The chromed ones have center core which is completely chromed and the sides are molded to this core. The core material is a grey ABS or polystyrene material as are the black sides. It is softened by lacquer thinner or acetone which generally indicates ABS. I have had hundreds of these sent to me over the yeas rand have never had an all black one from a '68 although it is entirely possible that they are out there.Jeff

My 67 convertible is built B-23 in 1966 and this is the handle. It must be like Wayne say's, random between chrome and black.

Our '67 coupe built A-31 is even earlier than Tim's so don't think all the early cars had black handles. This is the before picture...Jeff did a great job putting the "sparkle" back on the chrome. Don

          Thanks Tim

It seams odd the chevy would source different handle and use them in such a mixed fshion. My first 67 built in Feb 67 (vin 9749) had the chrome grip my current 67 (vin 2226) built on or about 30 Sept 66 has the all black handle. Others have a mix of them hard to know what should be in what car ! Oh well.

          Thanks for your help

The first few May have had all solid stainless handles. I dont know how many, but #5 certainly did. This was pilot stuff, and I dont know if it went over into regular production or not. Probably not.

Mine has the all black handle and was built on or about 30 Sept 67, not sure if it wore off and should be chrome or should it be all black. Thanks for the helpAl Burton

Interesting - never came across a car that early in the build process. Just makes keeping them "as built" all the more Challenging.

Revisiting the 67 E-brake handle again. Our B22 build '67 coupe, S/N 1476, has the same E-brake handle with the chrome trim as Tim's '67 convertible. It's also worthwhile reviewing Noland Adams' book on the subject, p 389, & his research indicates that the two different '67 Corvette E-brake handles went in & out installation throughout of the production year. So, whichever E-brake handle you have in your '67 & you have no reason the think it has been replaced, it's most likely the original. Pete

Thanks for your input, ours has a build date of 26 Oct 66 VIN 2226. The handle looks to be original to the car (normal wear, etc), waiting on Noland's book to come too. My other 67 (VIN 9749) had the chrome handle. Always liked the look of the chrome but would not change it. Thanks again. Al

My 67 June 23rd coupe handle is all black. Were these just in time parts from different suppliers? There doesn't seem to be much consistency.

My June 8th car also has the black handle. There was no such thing as "just-in-time" delivery in 1967, which is why material was stacked to the ceiling as "just-in-case" inventory. As indicated in the '67 JG, either version is acceptable.
