    the y- 50 mirror ?
if the allen bolt is seized - removed the interior door trim and remove the two nuts from the bottom - (hopefully they wont spin) and remove the whole mirro from the car.

Yes it is a Y50, I guess I was not real clear, how does the mirror itself come off the base. I would like (if possible) to remove the mirror to have the base rechromed. I know it can be sent off but would like to do it locally. I am assuming (trouble) the the back of the mirror is stainless. Is the swivel pressed in or threaded.
      Thanks again

        Phil,

My friend that restored mirrors, who has since passed away taught me the only way to disassemble an a Guide Y50 outside mirror is to break the glass.

The back is chrome not stainless on 1957 Guide Y50 mirrors. Sent my 1957 mirrors to Paul's Chrome to be redone.

You might check with Joyce Burrell who restores mirrors and advertises in the Driveline.

There is an allen bolt on the back side - lower - it attaches the mirror to the base
Remove the allen bolt and the mirror comes off its base

If you need to restore the mirror
          Send it to Joyce
She will prob be able to exchange it
          She has Y-50's in stock

I have worked with her several times

Phillip, I tried to remove the mirror from the ball on my original Y-50 and the result was a destroyed original mirror. I made a fork-type instrument to wedge between the ball and the back of the mirror; thinking that I could pull the mirror assembly off of the ball. The back of the mirror is very thin metal and I crushed the back plate. Joyce Burrell is the only expensive option I know of. She does not offer a discount when you send your mirror in for restoration. When she rechromes the back of the mirror, sometimes the chrome is thick and fills in the Guide Y-50 and sometimes it does not. Her prices depend on the degree of chrome deposited into the Guide y-50; at least when she sells them at NCRS events.

When I did my 61 mirror I did as much as I could myself. I removed the glass and mirror back plate (the swivel was loose, so I was going to have to repair that anyway). I then sent the bare frame to Paul's to have it chromed. He recommended having the engraving on the back redone, because the chrome process would have filled in most of the engraving.

When the mirror came back, Paul's had pressed out the ball from the base without any damage. I reassembled the mirror and then sent it out to Joyce to have the proper glass installed.

Thanks all for the information, it does appear that the ball stud can be removed I guess it is figuring out how, I will post the results from my attempt

                  Phil,

Soak the stud several days with Kroil Oil www.kanolabs.com

IIRC what I did - after several days of soaking with Kroil Oil, placed a small screwdriver or punch on the ball head with the base clamped down and gently tapped around the ball head until it came out.

Gary, one last question is the ball head grooved into the base or is just a friction fit, not that is matters just was wondering.
                    Thanks for the information

                      Phil,

The Guide Y50 mirrors I did had straight splines (notched/grooves).

                          Re: C1 Mirror repair (outside)

Get two pieces of flat stock 1 to 1-1/2 inches wide and about 1/8-3/16 thick. Total thickness must fit in the gap between the ball and the face of the base where the stud is pressed in. Slot both pieces to fit snugly around neck of the stud (yes, it's a straight spline). Bend the end of one piece slightly, 20-30*, just past the end of your slot. Slide both pieces over the neck of the stud, flat piece against the base and bent piece under the ball with the free ends apart and use the bent piece to lever against the flat one and pry the stud out. Works like a charm, I've done several this way.

Rod, Do you have any photos that you can post? Sorry, I'm a little confused about the bent end of the flat stock.

Rod, that looks like a good way, I imagine once it gets moving either with the tap method or prying up as you have done it comes out pretty easily. At least I have a couple of ideas to try.
