    1966 distributor ID question

I have a 66 L-79 which is supposed to have the 1111156 distributor; however, the ID band is missing. Is there any other way to identify the distributor?

I've been searching to see if there is anything that identified the 156 versus the 153 or any other distributor. I know that if the vacuum can is original I should the 236, but I don't think it is original.

    Thanks,

    Don Harris

Don, look at the advance "football" cam for the centrifugal advance. A normal style shaped "football" cam is the one for L79. You all ready know the vacuum can to look for. It should have the cast in tach drive, cast iron housing.

      Don -

All '63-'74 carbureted Corvettes used the same distributor housing - only the mix of tuning parts (mainshaft with "football", weights & springs, point cam plate, and vacuum advance) determined what part number band went on it at Delco-Remy. None of those tuning parts are visible as-installed except the vacuum advance.

        Don,

My 1111153 distributor dated "6 A 10" (Jan. 10, 1966) has a cam stamped "532" & "CCW", a shaft with the "football" stamped "208W", and 1881371 weights. The vacuum control on my 1111153 distributor is stamped "MS", "357", and "20" but I believe that the correct vacuum control is GM # 1115355.
The photo below is of a tracing of a 1881371 weight.

According to my 1967 Chev. Parts Catalog (Apr. 1967) the shaft listed for distributors 1111153 and 1111156 is GM # 1967241. The cam for distributors 1111109, 1111112, 1111141, 1111153, and 1111156 is GM # 1966994. The weight spring part number for 66-67 Corvettes (327)(exc. T.Ign.) is listed as 1951743. The vacuum control listed for the 1111156 distributor is GM # 1116236.

For '66 and '67 I believe the only difference between the 300 and 350 HP distributor was the VAC - 236, 8" for L-79 and 355-12" for base 300 HP. They both had the same centrifugal curves according to AMA specs.

The 236 is really too aggressive for the L-79 since it idles at 14-15". A 12" VAC meets the Two-Inch Rule.

Similarly the 355 is okay for a 300HP/automatic that idles at lower speed/vacuum in Drive than a manual in neutral. A 15" VAC meets the Two-Inch Rule for a manual idling in neutral.

A too aggressive VAC can cause part throttle detonation if fuel octane is marginal.

            Duke,

What you you mean by the "Two-inch Rule"?

            1116236 (stamped "MS", "236", "16")
            1115355 (stamped "MS, "355", "15")

It's been explained here a zillion times. May I suggest using the search function?

Or you can find it here:

                  Don,

I came across these two photos while looking thru my files. They might be helpful.
