That's a great finish for any cast part. Looks like nothing but I'm sure that it's Matte Clear that Joe L. suggested in post number 2! That steering gear box and the rear end could be distinguished by a Girl Scout at 100 yards. That's the finish you don't want on a restored Corvette! That steering box sure is not going to rust but it's not a reasonable finish like the Matte Clear from Krylon!

Joe L, I'm sure you are correct on the part number, as always, but the AIM doesn't list it separately. Its a 63-only rear spindle flange, a very rare part. I have two good ones that'll replace the service parts on my black car next time I take it apart...

Joe R, The part in that pic is Valspar clear flat, but I've used the Krylon Matte too. The Krylon works well, but if you put on more than one coat it tends to look a bit more glossy than a bare casting.

          Mike,

Thanks for the tip. I'll be trying the Valspar! That looks like no finish at all! Just a natural casting and that's what it's all about! This is not a beauty contest, it's an original contest!
See you in Kissimmee next week.

Thanks, Joe, see you in the sunshine next week. I painted a lot of my "bare" suspension parts with two coats of Valspar clear flat and they look just like that flange. Not one spec of rust.

The important thing is that some of these parts (like that spindle flange) are almost irreplaceable and getting more scarce every day. Chevy didn't make them with 2014 in mind, (they had to get out of the dealership in one piece) and most repros are crap, so if we're going to keep these cars up, we can't just keep repeatedly letting the original parts rust, then media-blast them clean. Why let them deteriorate at all?

If you can make them look like new and keep them that way… I say do it

Yes, every time rust forms on a part, that of course represents iron converted to iron oxide. So, every time rust is removed, there's less of the original part still there. This is acute and obvious when the corrosion proceeds to pitting, which structurally weakens the part to one degree or another. However, even just surface rust results in the part being "less than it was originally".

In the case of this GM #3832048 flange, it's a 1963-only item and unlikely to be ever reproduced. The supply of USABLE flanges is only going to go in one direction. It was discontinued from SERVICE in March, 1966 and replaced by GM #3843018, the forged piece used for 1964 and later. So, it was only available in SERVICE for about 3 years. About 10 years ago I was able to purchase a pair of NOS examples of the 3832048 [none for sale]. I was amazed I found them given they had been discontinued for so many years. Also, there probably never was much of a GMSPO inventory of them.
