This is my first try at posting photos I dont know how many I can post . This is the dirty intake from 65 BB #16120 . The right side had more overspray than the left & the front more than the rear . Those are great pictures and show exactly how his 396 had overspray. It's pics like those that restorers need to try to duplicate what really happened when these great Corvettes were built. Thanks Bill!
BUT, I would be willing to bet that there has NEVER been two Corvettes with the same overspray pattern. That in no way is putting down the above wonderful photos! We know that some template (paper or metal) was placed over the manifold in some order and someone with orange paint began to blow it in the direction of the motor.
We should rest assured that judges are schooled so that they can recognize the attempt to duplicate overspray patterns. If they cannot they should be given the task of painting one themselves before they judge. OK, fat chance of that!!!!!

I had my 396 Coupe in the Duntov Display at the 2007 Marlborough National - car was a Triple Crown Winner as well. I had the car on the show trail for 12 years and all I can say was anytime other 396's were also in the shows my overspray was quite a lot more then the others I saw. I can not speak for the other cars but I know I never lost any points on overspray.- Top

For some reason, until several years ago, some folks thought that a big block with an aluminum manifold was painted with no mask/cover on the intake manifold, at all. I've seen several big block restorations that showed this same overspray pattern.
Most of the areas that show orange on the manifold should show a more definite mask line, especially on the intake runners where the mask fit much better.- Top

Tony the bolts on this engine have a recessed head and or painted silver or cad plated , I cant tell the head markings . The bolts from #16120 are flat head with an A . I looked at them again this morning and can find no sign of cad but they are black under the head . Could the survivor have been a late car ? Any idea when the bolt style change was made ?- Top

In the early '90s, I visited the owner during the '69-71 period (Marshall TX). Said he still had a few parts in a barn on the family farm (stock valve covers, hood grille rain baffles, '66! hubcaps). Back then, he'd replaced the orange covers with the GM chrome plated ones that he ordered from Nickey Chev, in Chicago. Jotted down part # on one of the two boxes in which he'd stored these originals; 3925574. He was probably the 3rd owner.
Tonawanda spray gun missed about 14 inches, starting at the breather fitting, going forward. Close-up pic shows a heavy application of paint, causing a run. You can't duplicate this stuff !!- Top

See they were trying to be neat and keep it off the intake .
The bellhousing on 17346 has almost no overspray on the left side and an inch or less on the right . no overspray on the clutch fork .

Freezing in my garage -- on my avatar driveway pic, it's the hardtop on the left.
This is the only picture I have of the Tonawanda engine paint process and the only one I've ever seen.
It appears that the paint process is all from one side. I suppose one painter does one side, then spins the engine around and the next man does the other side??? Or maybe one man does each complete engine.
Notice the cover over the bypass hose. Also the small plate covering the stamp pad. Both appear to be connected to a rod of some sort.
It also looks like some sort of tube is fitted over each spark plug.
I think John Hinckley was there for a while in the late 60's and he said that each engine was painted in something like 11 seconds.- Top
