1967 L 88 coming up at BJ Scottsdale

Since I haven't been around here much lately I did a search to see if this has been discussed, but didn't find anything.

I saw where BJ is selling a red/red '67 L 88 Coupe at the upcoming Scottsdale Auction. I clicked on their website to see details on the car but didn't find much information other than the "one of one red 67 L88's" and "Duntov Award" comments.

If there was only one red/red '67 L 88 and it is the same car that I believe I saw about 20 years ago, give or take, it took some incredible effort to get it from where it was to Duntov standards. I saw this car at a shop here in Georgia and I believe I was told it belonged to an out of state NCRS member who I had met a time or 2. I'm pretty sure I remember it having red/red trim tag. If this is the same car it got a surround and the rest of the front end using NOS GM glass and rear quarters also. I think it was due to flares rather than collision damage. It left here either in bare glass or primer, (can't recall) and I saw it multiple times as the work progressed. I think he had refined his process specifically for this car. He was at the time very proud of his process of applying just the right amount of panel strip adhesive with an old style cake decorating device and was also using tinting to get it to the exact color. The car also did not have the original engine, although they located an NOS block somewhere that was unstamped and had passable date codes for the car. If I remember right it was supposedly going on to Houston for completion and the engine was going to be done there also. I don't recall what the stated plan was for the stamping.

If this is the same car, I wonder what kind of information will be forthcoming on it's history or if somebody spending BJ type dollars on it will care.

Hopefully we can watch a lot of the cars from B/J on TV. But if you read their lineup catalog a lot of them we will miss due to the new TV
lineup schedule. A lot of the program will be shown on Fox Sport 2 and National Geographic Channels which I do not get. Those two are
super premium channels on my Comcast and cost a lot more. I do get Fox Sport 1 and Fox Business which will have some of the program
on. Looks like a lot of channel switching to keep up. I'll stick with Mecum's; all on Velocity and no gimmicks. Larry

In comparison to B/J that is. Mecum will show more cars in an hour then B/J in three. IMHO Larry

I don't know where Mecum is going, but on the last auction a week or so ago they were bidding farewell to Velocity Channel. They didn't say what's next, only that they won't be back on Velocity next year. Maybe it's on their website. Larry, I'm guessing they're gonna' get a '67 L88 on TV considering that the last one sold for $3M.

As far as gimmicks, I was watching B J recently and they sold a '63 black fuelie convertible, described as having a replacement engine for $175K. I didn't delete it from my recorder because I was so flabbergasted. I mean, isn't that $100K too high for that car?

In the car world nothing is too high if you are uneducated.

I will be at BJ this year. I hope all the NCRS claims on the car are documented by our crack NCRS team that will be there.

If it's the car I've seen, and I think there's a good chance it is, there's probably an awful lot about it that "our crack NCRS team" isn't aware of. There's no question that the state of the art has reached a level that can make a silk's purse out of a sow's ear, especially when there are potential profits of multi millions.

Norris, I am sure that the car that you saw years ago is the same being auctioned at Scottsdale. I remember that car first being shown at Bloomington 93 when it was held in Springfield. The car looked incredible and it had an NOS IT motor that had no vin stamped on it. The car has a real tank sticker that has been validated according to the BJ site. I believe that this car will sell for more than the maroon convertible did a couple of months ago. BTW, this car will go across live on FOX according to the auction catalog.

Aw c'mon now Dick, we all know you tune in to BJ just to see the babble from "Maxim Magazine's April Rose". I've heard from unreliable sources that NCRS is considering putting her on as a judge at the national due to her vast automotive knowledge.

It sure is shiny. I didn't know they painted the heads. At least this one has rallies on it.

Yes, the aluminum cyl heads on 67 L88 were originally painted along with the rest of the engine.

One of the only original 67 L88 engines known to exist is the one in the white Burroughs/Krughoff car. The engine still had most of it's original orange paint, including the heads.

About 25 years ago, I painted the replacement engine for the well known 12 mile red coupe. The aluminum heads and exhaust manifolds were painted in place when I painted it.
