Re: 1972 LT-1 Exhaust System for judging ?

The last three exhaust systems I have ordered from up north were bent to fit an 18 wheeler!!!! They sure were not bent with a Corvette in mind. After pictures and exchanges of words with some very closed minds the pipes were exchanged for some that would fit. Never again will I order an exhaust system from that company!
Gardener gets my nod! They make excellent systems and they appreciate your business!

      Guys,

I just installed a CC N11 system on my 65 last Sunday. Went together perfectly and love the fit. Love the sound also! There are two downsides that I see. One is the hardware. No where close to TFP. Bought the clamps from LIC and will be buying the exhaust tips from them also. The second issue I did not see until last night when I put the car back on the lift to retighten all nuts after a heat cycle. The drivers side head pipe comes very close to the side of the oil filter. Close enough that I can not slip my finger in the gap. I will start a different post on that with pictures as I am concerned about heat soak to the oil passing thru the filter. Any initial thoughts?

        Guys

I have the 2.5 inch Gardner exhaust system on my '71. Took minimal deductions when it went through Duntov judging. The fit was outstanding and I had the mufflers welded on.

Were the service crimped the same as OEM? I plan on putting these 68s on the car and welding the pipes to muffler. No mouse in the trap.

            1. Gardner exhaust system on the front pipes has a deduction of 40 to 45% if the judges are following the CDCIF for Date and Finish and the Judging Reference Manual. On the front pipes you will have divide points between the pipes and the heat riser.

            2. The rear pipe do worse due to the configuration is not totally correct not flattened under the Differential and the added weld at the muffler 2 welds when there should only be 1. So the CDCIF does a 60 to 65% deduction.

            3. Mufflers are getting better but they still have a Configuration, Date and Finish problem so back at the 60% deduction per the CDCIF.

Here are some photos of a 1972 LT-1 exhaust hope this helps. Will add some other photos I have. As others have stated no reproduction system will pass NCRS judging.

Current plans are for me to bring the 1970 to KC this Summer so everyone there can see an original system with original black out.

Maybe we will do a "truth or dare."

You've threatened to get the 1970 before, so maybe getting it out is the "truth or dare."

All 1966 -80 Corvette small blocks used exhaust manifolds with 2" outlets. So, all of those with 2-1/2" exhaust (L-46, LT-1, L-82) used the 2" to 2-1/2" transition. On earlier cars the pipes were swaged. On later (from about 1973 and SERVICE after about 1973), a 2" short section was welded to the 2-1/2" section.

All big block were 2-1/2" for their entire length except 1969. All 1969 big blocks used a 2" exhaust. So, there was a short 2-1/2" section from the manifold which transitioned to a 2" pipe for the rest of the system.

The Gardener system has the "crimped bend" configuration. However, it is simulated and, thus, not exactly as-original.
                    Hi Joe,

                    I thought the 70 L46 was a 2" exhaust system.

                      Yes, 1970 L-46 did use a 2" system; I mis-spoke.

Ratts! I was hoping I was wrong and could install the 2-1/2" system

That just proves it has moved since October of 2007 when the Z06 showed up.

It was a lot earlier than that when it went in the garage last. I am trying (not too hard) to figure that out, but my best guess is between 7 and 10 years since it last saw the light of day.
