C1 Brain Twister..can you answer this question?? Brake Drums

Here are two pictures of a 1st design big brake finned drum. Notice how the semi eliptical finger is pressed in on the face plate located in one of the hole cut outs.

What was the purpose and was this done on all drums? Front and rear, big brake and standard drums?

    Joe
On 1954 3803 - I have the same thing - I call it a locating hole or tang - since the drum will only go on one way....
Mine has the standard drums with the anti chatter spring groove.
I can get you photos if needed
Done one purpose ?? I would assume so.....

Drums and hubs were balanced as an assembly........the tang locates the drum in the proper position.

I'm told that is why early HD front brake fans had 6 holes.

A mystery would be why Z06 had 5 hole fans.

Hey Joe, My early 58' RPO684 has its original front and rear drums. The tang on the front drums are turned in like the one in your photo but the rears were not. Hope this helps!
