How is the drivability compare between small block and big block

I have a 66 small block (L79) coupe and really enjoy driving it. The only option is power brakes that work great, but I could even live without them. I've been looking for a convertible, 66 or 67. I want another 350HP car and don't really car about options. I have looked at a number of cars from Mecum auction, dealers, and individuals. I haven't found the car that I want to spend money on yet.

I found a guy through the Driveline that has what sound like a nice 66 at a decent price. The problem, if there is a problem, is that it is a big block car. It's a the milder 390HP car. I have not seen the car yet or obviously driven it.

I want to drive and enjoy my cars. How does the drive compare between a SB and BB?

    Thanks,

    Don

I think you would be happy with the 390hp I liked mine in a 1970, and also feel that the L79 is about as good as you can get for a all around driver great power and driveability IMO

The 427/390 is less high strung than the L-79, which has good driveability. The reduced valve overlap certainly makes L-79 easier to deal with around town than any mechanical lifter small block, and L-36 has less overlap than L-79

The downside to any big block is higher fuel consumption, not quite as nimble handling, and probably a much higher price than the same year with a L-79. Also, internal engine parts are much more expensive.

One the upside the 390 HP offers massive low end torque that will provide spirited acceleration even with a 3.08 axle, which yields more relaxed highway cruising.

If you go with the BB, get power steering. There is a noticeable increase in weight over the front end with a BB. My $0.02

            Jim,

I will admit that I have not driven a BB with power steering. But my BB with manual steering is fine for me. It is a bit of work at parking lot speeds, for sure. Other than that, it's great, good feel, no complaints.

Don't be afraid of going BB I have a 66 L36 Coupe myself with no P/S or P/B, good exercise for the arms in the parking lot but not bad on the road, you can always add P/S. You will love the bottom end torque, gas mileage is not that bad on the highway. Run AC R-45 heat range spark plugs to reduce plug fouling.

Thanks all. The heavier front end was what I was most concerned about. E.g. steering and handling.

                Thanks again,
