    Re: Flight Judging and PV?

A driven car has a much better path to success on a PV as compared to a fresh restored trailer queen. Take that Corvette out and run thru the gears and see what it will do. A Corvette that can't get redline is a joke. Find out what is wrong, fix it and try it again and again till it performs as it should. Don't be acceptance of just meeting 90% red line, make that car exceed it with no problems. A few suggestions I will give are use aviation gas, use good performance points, plug wires, distributor cap and correct long rotor. Carburetor MUST be set up correctly and with throttle plates opening all the way. Have enough advance to run up redline. Be sure that the PV judge will inspect that the vacuum line is connected as GM spec'd. Leaks and drips WILL FAIL, so will anything that falls off or comes apart.

Actually, it was to facilitate getting some cars thru so we could have Zora on hand to participate in the awards ceremony, as we were concerned about his health. Fortunately, GIN seems to have theraputic properties as he was with us for several years after the first awards were presented.

I want to pile on and get a silly question answered as I do not have the PV manual yet. I am considering this process for my 65 fuel car. When taking to 90% redline, is it done just in first gear? Two gears? I am not to ashamed to say that my car has seen redline in first and second gear more then once. Now mine has never been apart so I do trust that Chevrolet was putting them together pretty well back then. Also, I believe the MPH was up to 60 or over (do not know for sure as I was trying to pay attention to the tach and the road) in first gear so I see how that could violate some speed laws. Second gear is higher then any highway limit I know of!

The red line test is generally only done in first gear, however, if the owner wishes to continue the driving experience I expect most TL would not object unless they felt your driving skills were questionable. I will spare all of you the complete story of the one 1967 I PVed in which the owner insisted he would show us C3 guys what a 1967 435 could do and proceed to exceed the century mark. He was not a skilled driver and I regret to this day not failing him for sheer stupidity.

My experience is that cars that have never been apart do better at the PV than cars that have been disassembled. My belief is that it is very difficult to assemble the car as well as those who have done it thousands of times already.

Some of the requirements are that the car be legally licensed (tags) and the driver have proof of ownership and a valid driver's license. This sounds like a bit of common sense, one would think. One owner presented himself and his car, but admitted he didn't have a driver's license. When questioned about these circumstances he admitted he was legally blind.

Now in most cases the car owner is required to drive the car for PV, but in the case of a handicap that prevents safe driving an alternate driver generally can be agreed upon with the NTL. It is recommended the PV participant be in communication with the NTL before the event if for no other reason than to set up a time for the start of the PV, however at this time it might be a good idea to mention anything you think might prevent you safely operating the vehicle.
