I just removed the flywheel from my 65 bb chassis it has 3791021 cast in the back with a date of D55 . my car is #17346 and was built in May 65 . Is this the original ? I have seen photos of "lightweights" and I dont remember them looking like mine . If its not what is the correct casting / part number for a new one . Thanks Bill .

Re: 396 fly wheel
Bill, I believe the 3791021 is p/n 3973452 which was for most 63-68 except powerglides and heavy duty clutch applications. The L78 used p/n 3868806 - I'll have to find the casing number - search old threads from this summer - there was a thread with lot of info / discussion on large vs small diameter flywheels- Top

Re: 396 fly wheel
I can't swear to the casting number, but in 1965, ALL Corvettes with a manual tranny (including the 396) had the smaller, 12 3/4in diameter flywheel with 153 teeth. They WERE NOT the light weight version. The ones I've seen (which is VERY few from a Vette) appear to be the standard type 63-later 153 teeth (heavy) flywheels.
ON A CORVETTE--------the larger, 14in diameter, 168 teeth flywheels were introduced in 66.
Beginning in 1955, ALLLLLLLLLLLL Chevy V8 engines had the larger, 168 teeth flywheel up through 62 (that's all there was on ANY Chevy V8). When the smaller, 153 teeth flywheel was first used in 63--------------DEPENDING ON ENGINE--------full size Chevys came with both 153 and 168 teeth flywheels. Thus, TWO different size bell housings and two different mounting configurations for starters were used.- Top

I haven't looked up your 3791021 number but that sounds like a standard 153 tooth flywheel for 10.5" clutches for about 1961 and later.
The 65 Corvette with 396 engine used a 153 tooth wheel too but it was a "light weight" design. (listed as 15 lb) The same wheel was also used for 67-69 L88 Corvette.- Top

I've had the car since 1988, and prior to that it has never been owned by an NCRS-type numbers enthusiast.

Re: 396 fly wheel
All------
1965 L-78's were supposed to have been equipped with a 12-3/4" light weight flywheel. Originally, it was GM PART #3866735. Were all original L-78's equipped with this flywheel? I don't know. In any event, you can still obtain a flywheel from GM which is virtually identical to the original under GM #14085720.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 396 fly wheel
Thanks everybody . My car went through a couple engine changes but most of the bolt on were still correct . The cast date on my 021 flywheel is about 5 weeks before my car was built so I guess it could be original ? I ordered a new light weight today & will pick it up tomorrow .- Top

Re: 396 fly wheel
My 1965 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (May 1965) lists GM # 3866735 as the part number for the 65 Corvette (396) flywheel in Gr. 0.666. The description is as follows: "solid type (six 15/32 holes marked "V" and 1 marked "W")". My 1965 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (Jan. 1965) does not list a flywheel for the 65 Corvette (396) since the 396 option was not added until mid production.
GM # 3866735 is a service part (Casting # 3856579, I believe) and who knows when it was first used on the assembly line. Does anyone have a 3856579 flywheel with a 1965 casting date before July 1965?
GM # 3866735 was replaced with GM # 3991406 in Oct. 1971 as per Chevrolet Parts History.- Top

Re: 396 fly wheel
I have a book entitled "Corvette Restoration State of the Art" (1981) that is about the ground up restoration of a very original 1965 Corvette (396) w/M.T. The engine is stamped "T0329IF" (March 29, 1965). On page 74 there is a photo of the backside of the engine. The flywheel appears to be a 3856579 (cast. #) flywheel as you can clearly see the pairs of "bosses" (each with a small hole) between the pressure plate bolts. There are a total of 6 pair of these "bosses" on the face of the 3856579 flywheel. The 3791031 flywheel does not have these "bosses".
The flywheel currently on Ebay in the link below shows the 12 "bosses" on the face side of the flywheel.

I'm not sure if that's the original flywheel in that car.- Top
