    '92 Factory Security System

I looked at a '92 Coupe a few days back. It is a low mileage car and it looks very well cared for. Very nice and clean with original equipment except it has what looks to be a well installed aftermarket security system. It has a key fob that will lock and unlock the doors and chirps when activated and deactivated. The problem I'm having is I do not know what the original '92 cars had as a security system and how it worked. Through a search on the internet, I have found that there is some type of sensor on the key that is used but that is about all I know. Could a '92 owner or someone very familiar with '92's answer my questions:

    1. What is controlled in the '92 security system? Doors, hatch, other?
    2. How do you engage the security system?
    3. How do you turn the security system off?
    4. Does the horn sound when you set the security system or do the lights flash?
    5. What happens if the system is set off?
    6. Any problems with the security system?

Any other insight or info on the security system is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Terry

Audible warning is sounded using the horns if the doors or hatch has an unauthorized entry. System is engaged when the power lock is moved to the lock position. The system is disarmed by using the oval head key in the door lock cylinder. Horn will sound when the alarm is activated. ( That is the short version of what I emailed you.

Terry, yep, the fob is aftermarket and the siren that chirps is too. I installed this type of system in my 92. You have an alarm, siren and somewhere there's a circuit board with 2 relays on it to operate the door solenoids. The Security light is part of the 92's Theft Deterrent System. The flashing security light on the dash is a reminder to arm the system (by using the power lock button on the door panel). The system will then activate if the door or hatch is opened. The horn will sound for 3 minutes and the starter will not work until the proper key is put in the ignition (part of the VATS system with the resistor in the key). If you use the key to lock the door from the outside, the system will not arm. I've had zero problems with the system. However, the aftermarket alarm has a quirk in that if I lock the door from the inside and then hit "lock" on the fob, the GM alarm (horn) will go off. No problems if I just use the Fob. And I'm too lazy to mess with it to see if it can be fixed.

If you buy this car, hope it comes with an owners manual, it will cover the 92's security system.
