54 license plate bezel fastening

Were the screws installed directly into the fiberglass or can J nuts be slipped over the holes if they are too big like the gas tank cover. The lid is painted now. If J nuts are an option will the bezel look higher than normal? Have you folke run into something like this? Thanks again for the help!!

the screws go right into the fiberglass
No room for j nuts
There is a bezel, the clear plastic shield, and a gasket.
I always fill the holes when doing my body work - that way - when you go to install the rear screws - they are nice and tight vs wallered out holes......

While the screws went directly into fiberglass when '54s were manufactured, the threads eventually will wear out. Several of the holes on my '54 have worn threads. I have successfully slipped J-nuts into place and I don't see any effect on the fit of the chrome license frame.

When threads will not be visible you can wrap aluminum foil around the threads to make the screw body fatter without changing the screw head size.
