I don't pay much attention to mileage on these cars. Almost any one of them with more than 40K+_ miles are not correct. That is about the time the odometer gear would go out and not many jumped to repair them.

Dale, I am not sure I understand what you are saying, is it only the mileage that's different, lower than when you owned the car? If so is the change significant (106,000 when you owned it vs 6,000 mi now)? Is it more than mileage, a NOM car when you owned it that is now advertised as original motor, or born as a 300 hp car and now a 435?
I appreciate it is hard for a new owner to hear the car he just paid a big number for was misrepresented and he got screwed, and that it will be hard for him now to honestly represent the car and get his money back. The next buyer will be innocent and I am not sure it helps anyone to confront him- sounds like the damage was done long ago and then perpetuated. Good luck with your decision on how to proceed.

I'm reading that it was probably a small block and it is now a big block and Dale would like to let potential buyers know this somehow. Of course, the current owner would be hurt by this information.

Solution is simple, grind out the VIN on the pad and it will never be mistaken for the original engine again.

Thanks Gene, that is one solution. But I am wondering for future judging, if that would get a new owner more or less deductions than the bare block with good broach and no stamps? here is a picture of it:

              Michael,
Seeing the lack of the stamping abnormality a knowledgeable judge will deduct anyway. Also the deck looks like it is cut deep.

well, after reading many emails and posts. I have made the call to let it go. I know what it was and what it is. I can not 100% prove what is was (though I do have some minor documentation) but nothing a good "restorer" and lawyer couldn't punch holes in. I am sure that all the documentation that is now with the car (especially the POP & tank sticker) look extremely impressive .. I also know that they appeared from no where ... enough said ... I suspect that unless the very original GM data is made available that car will continue to be "original" with all its documentation.

If you paid for born with DT and only got numbers matching with a restoration engine, then you MAY have paid a little too much. But now that you know it is NOM, but has a very good restoration engine with matching verified paper, you have a very good and valuable 67 that you can enjoy and pass down if you wish. No dilemma and no nightmare. Of course none of this helps OP one wit with his question about what to do about the 67 he owned in the 70s. As I said before, I am not sure why what is going on with that car is any concern of his now, unless he wants to buy it back.
Don, I don't usually agree with you but this time you hit the nail right on the head. I could not have said this better myself.

As for the mileage issue, some of you are missing the point. These are not "used cars". Many of them have been hand built from the ground up, including the odometer. There's nothing old or used about them. Unfortunately, many of us will still pay a premium for a low mileage car, even when it should'nt make any difference. I know, I know...this is the nature of the beast and I'm not going to change it.

Thanks Gene, so let me make sure I understand you, if my current pad losses 88 points for the restoration engine (and I assume it would lose just as many if I take my rotary grinder to the VIN stamp and take it off), then a bare block with proper broach marks and no stamps would also lose 88 points?
