    Z L1 question

On page 8 & 9 of the new Driveline it shows photos of a L88 ,ZL1 (1 of 2 ) and a ZR1 . I thought the ZL1s were accounted for ,The yellow with black stripes & the white with black stripes . The one on page 8 is a red conv. ?

The yellow ZL-1 and the orange (not red) ZL-1 pictured in the article are the only 2 apparently documented ZL-1's. These 2 match the total number of ZL-1's that GM says were manufactured. The white ZL-1 is, from what I'm told, without documentation.

The yellow one with black stripes. The documention is in the form of copies possessed by a restorer. It was confiscated from a previous owner by the DEA and obviously that owner did not turn over the original docs.

A friend on mine worked at Anchor when the car car was unloaded of the train. He copied everything that he could including the shipping manifest. Engine has a good story, think the story is in the Restorer . I saw that car as it went through the first restoration. Neat car

I met a guy years ago who went to high school with the original owner in Richmond. The original engine was blown and replaced under warrrantee very early in its life. The story Wayne Walker concocted about recovering the original engine from a crashed boat is complete BS. He was negotiating with John Lister, the painter for the Group 44 Jaguar racing team, for the same ZL-1 engine I bought for my LT-1 car but I was was willing to pay more. I think Wayne wound up using a much repaired aluminum block from his drag car which was called "Mr. Zip" from the carton character used by the Post Office to publicize the new idea of Zip codes in the 60's.

Mr. Zip was a 1957 chevy sedan delivery running in junior stock in the late 1960's and as such could not have run a big block. Wayne

So that story about tracking the engine down is not true?

Perhaps Wayne Walkers welded up aluminum block was from from another of his race cars or was just a beat up ex-race piece he had. John Lister had a complete 69 ZL-1 engine including its original carb that both Wayne Walker and I were interested in buying around 1978. Since Wayne had a beat-up piece as a backup he was not as motivated as me to pay John Lister's price although he told me later he wished he had bought it. At any rate, the original engine of the ZL-1 had been blown around 1970-1, and any engine from that car floating around Richmond would have been the warrantee replacement engine. It had an iron engine in it when Wayne bought it.

I know there is a complete ZL-1 engine in a 69 Corvette somewhere in southern California. I'm quite sure it is "Not for Sale".

Here is a copy of an ad from the September 2009 issue of Hemmings Motor News, page 380:

ALUMINUM big block, ZL1 (bare), #3946052, this is an original 1969 427 block used in a 1969 Corvette, front pad reads TO73IME, VIN 19S729219; does anyone know who may need this for their 1969 ZL1 Corvette? Please call me, time to clean out the garage. 310-329-5334, CA.

I wonder if that is a real ad or just someone joking with the owner of vin 29219 who perhaps claims it has the original ZL-1 engine.

I just googled 193679S729219, and it is the VIN number of the yellow former Wayne Walker ZL-1 whose engine story we have been discussing.
