Re: Z L1 question
The "White one with Black Stripes" is my car, it is not a ZL-1, it is a 68 L-71 that was sold by the Tech Center in February 69 with the Black ZL-1 Stripe on the Nose. I bought it from the original owner and I have original documentation including pictures from February 69. As far as I know, the pictures I have show the only ZL-1 Factory Painted stripe. The Yellow car does not match the ZL-1 RPO for the stripe or the pictures of my White car in 69. (similar design, but not correct dimensions and some minor differences in the design of the stripe). The "Orange one" I don't believe ever had the ZL-1 RPO for the stripe like the Yellow one. My White Car is believed to be the "Stripe Mule" and has been documented by Rick Bizzoco ("The 69 Stingray" author).- Top

I think we may be talking about different cars. In any event, the one I was referring to is a car that was originally purchased by a fellow that works/worked for the IRS. Later and for quite some time it belonged to Otis Chandler, once publisher of the Los Angeles Times.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Does this mean that three of the original two are now accounted for?- Top

Re: Z L1 question
There was also a blue car that one of the Corvette magazines ran a feature on sometime in the 90's with some tall tale about why it was definately THE missing 2nd car. It may've been Corvette Fever, but not sure. So apparently there are at least 4 of the original 2 now accounted for. I may still have that article in the attic somewhere.- Top

Re: Z L1 question
All------
Here's how I understand it:
yellow car: documented ZL-1 (but, apparently, without its original engine) Has nose striping essentially as shown in AIM
white car: no documentation but the original owner "certifies" it was originally a ZL-1; has nose striping which differs from AIM;
orange car: reportedly owned by the original owner until just several years ago; reportedly has documentation (but I've never seen it); THM-400-equipped; no nose striping, at all.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Z L1 question
As I recall..the mustache on the yellow car is or was a decal and the mustache on the white car is painted.
real or imagined...Bill Lacy and I interviewed a St. Louis plant worker many years ago in the St.Louis area who worked on the line. When we asked him about the ZL1 cars he called over another former St.Louis plant worker who said he was the one who " painted " the mustache on the white ZL1 car.
The previous poster of the 68 with the painted mustache emailed me vintage pictures of his car years ago and it looks genuine and could very well have been the mule for this paint scheme.

Re: Z L1 question
the stripe was definitely painted on my White car (not a decal), and I have the Tech Center ownership documents (actual Registration and sale sheet etc.). As far as I know, the Yellow car would have had a painted stripe on it also from the factory.- Top
