Has anyone else got or seen 3782461 cylinder heads without the "double hump" cast into the end?

Re: 461 heads with no end markings
I have 2, one in my 62 FI dated December 1961 and another dated January 1965. The one on the engine was "caught" at the Nationals (I never noticed it). Just curious.- Top

Re: 461 heads with no end markings
i recently judged a 62 with one of the humps at each end shorter then the other. Everything else looked correct.

Re: 461 heads with no end markings
I have a pair (461X) that have a "notch" cut out of just one hump on each end. These are on the fresh 383 in my 51 Chevy.
And speaking of "cheater" heads, this is a 66 462 2.02 set of heads on the SB400 in my 56.
Humps ground off and a pyramid symbol shaped to resemble a 57 539 head. Back in the day of running in a pure stock class (such as in a 57 Chevy), this was done by a few guys "in the know" so that heads with bigger valves could be installed for added performance. I bought these from a friend 25-30yrs ago.

Re: 461 heads with no end markings
Tom: after removing the camel's humps, take a needle air hammer(like the navy uses to de-rust their ships) and beat the hell out of the casting area where the humps have gone bye-bye. the air hammer will give the surface a rough, sand cast finish. i assume JB Weld or a similar epoxy was used to create the triangle on the top of the rectangle.one can also remove the 6 motor mount bosses on the side of the block to simulate a 348 block. the boos to attach the Z-bar pivot will also need to leave. all of the above is second hand info. regards,mike- Top

Re: 461 heads with no end markings
Mike,
Where the two humps used to be, that area was ground down low enough so that the pyramid symbol could be formed in the remaining flat symbol. Thus, it is ALL metal. "Back in the day" the tech inspectors at the strip didn't notice the height of the flat portion. they were only looking for the actual symbol. And since the 539 heads were used on 57 FI engines as well as "Power Pack" engines in the pass cars, they didn't catch on--------------------------------at first. As time went by, and tech inspectors became better educated/knowledgeable, they took a closer look at the ends of the heads.
My heads above had undergone some SERIOUS abuse back in their day, but when I had them rebuilt, my machinist said they were near perfect. I no longer have to worry about tech inspectors, so I've had them lightly messaged internally, plus additional bosses welded, drilled, tapped so that staggered 9-fin covers can be used.- Top
