    Re: NCRS Online Classified Advertising

    Guys,

I attended the Board meeting and what was presented (same information Vinnie printed in the Restorer magazine) was approved by the Board. Nothing was behind "closed doors".

The Board's objective was for the on-line classified ads to pay their own way; i.e. classified ad software, software maintenance/support and server space, etc.

Why do you need "classified ad software? All you need is server space (For Sale - C1, C2, C3....etc.).

Example; Scroll towards the bottom of the page to "The Militaria E-Stand" where dues paying members ($25 or $35 annually) can sell their items for free.

I check out the Wehrmacht awards myself... used to collect some FJ stuff.... sold it though, and bought my '67.

        Gary...
Is that the same meeting where Dick says,
Being the lone member that stayed for the meeting, I can tell you they only voted on the proposal with details to be worked out later. They then moved to the next item on the agenda

          Not so Ken...

As the one who assembled and sent the proposal to every member of the BoD, I can tell you there is no hidden agenda here. I spoke with and traded email with them all. The online classifieds will need to support itself. One of the options in my proposal was to charge a modest fee for listing a part just to get this rolling. I am convinced the listing fee is an interium condition. Once this train starts down the track, the cash cow will be revenue from advertiser's banner and leader ads. I can't speak with 100% certainty, but NCRS members should be able to list for free when that day comes.

And for the record, the amount of revenue coming from these advertisers will be completely dependant on the amount of online traffic the classifieds section gets. Think positive thoughts here folks. When this comes online. shop early and often. I expect a lot of hard to find "good stuff" will surface.

I left as soon as the proposal was voted on. Apparently later in the meeting the rules were laid out

Maybe I missed it somewhere- but has the fee been stated somewhere as to how much it actually is? Will it be a flat fee or a percentage?

See Pg 48/49 of new Restorer magazine. Very nominal flat fee.

I think around $2.50 per parts listing and $5 for a car listing. Charges incurred from the Credit card companies drove most of that... No percentage of selling fee at all.

Have to pay to play as with most things. If a small fee is necessary to cover expenses, seems like the thing to do.

So we all discussed the Online Classified section 'til we were blue in the face, petitioned the board to approve our request, got a positive decision from the board, and now we have (or will have shortly) an online classified ad section on our site. What's the problem; we got what we wanted. Of course there are going to be costs involved in this endeavor, and we all knew that going in. Why don't we just hold our complaints for a while and see how it all pans out. If changes need to be made, I'm sure that can happen once we figure out what does and does not work.

Disclaimer:I have never bought anything from the Driveline and I think listed one item for sale in the almost 29 years I have belonged to NCRS, so I really don't have a dog in the hunt other than thinking it is good for the membership.

Now with that said let's give it a chance to work, if there are hiccups, as with most anything new there will be, and give the programmers and powers to be a chance to refine it.
