    SEM Interior dye

I bought a pair of seat backs at Carlisle that need to be re-dyed. Anyone have a part number for Sem dye that best matches black interior?? Also, the existing dye is spotty, can or should the old dye be removed before re-dying? Thanks!!

    Lynn,
Isn't dye more for fabric? The seat backs are plastic. I would suggest a paint designed to adhere to plastic once the old stuff is removed. On my white seat backs I use a semi flat (semi gloss) paint made by Sherwin Williams. They went thru judging just fine. But be sure to keep to just one light as possible coat or else they will look painted.

If you have a SEM dealer near you, take a piece of your existing black and they can match it.

I just refinished my 67 Medium Saddle seat backs using the interior dye products from Corvette America. Lightly scuffing the old finish with Scotchbrite and cleaning the surface with SEM 38373 SEM SOLVE so as to not destroy the molded in grain pattern. Then sprayed two light overlapping coats of interior dye and let dry overnight. Then finished with one coat of Corvette America interior satin clear which mimics the original finish perfectly. I also used this same process to restore and completely re-color (black to Med Saddle) seat belt retractor covers. You can't discern a new cover from a freshly dyed one. I used this procedure for the radio side trim panels, console, interior window trim, halo and fresh air knob.

I was under the impression that the "Dye" is more like a paint. Is the dye similar to what was used on the plastic parts in the factory? Either way I bought some dye from CA a while ago and it was awful, just wouldn't spray smoothly. Perhaps it was old but I'll use SEM from now on since it's a superrior product.

Will SEM Paints (SEM15013) Color Coat - Landau Black Aerosol provide the correct gloss on it's own or will a top coat be required as some have indicated? Thanks!!

I've used the Corvette America products in the past and have been very pleased. Can't tell the difference between the repair section and the original, untouched areas.
