Your '89 has a roller cam, but sliding surfaces at the rocker arm. Choosing between S and C-category in this case is nothing to loose sleep over. Either should be satisfactory. I use 15W-40 CJ-4 in all my cars, the newest being a 1991 model. That way I only have to keep one type or oil around.

I've run just about every sort of oil made in my '85. In the last decade it's been all synthetic. Everything has worked. When it comes to the cooling system I use distilled water only.

Do you mean that you use only distilled water with no ethylene glycol coolant? If so, I definitely don't recommend that. For one thing, you will have absolutely no corrosion protection. For another thing, you won't have the boil-over protection margin that you need, especially for operating conditions that challenge cooling systems.

You're right about that. I sometimes tell people to run about 25% anti-freeze for that reason. It raises the boiling point. Because mine is a track car it gets the coolant changed about every 2 months. Here's an article did for Vintage Motorsport magazine a few months back. It's all about cooling systems.
