Re: Correct 68 L79 Oil Pan
The part number, 3956679 sounds too high, numerically, to be the original part number for 68. That sounds more like a number for 69 or 70.
I don't remember if there was a physical difference between the 68 and 69 pans. Hopefully, someone that does know will get involved.
I have a 69 printing of the parts book but I don't have one for 68.
Edit: I just looked in a parts book dated Nov 1969 and the part number for 63-68 at that time was 3820000.- Top

Re: Correct 68 L79 Oil Pan
Thanks guys for your help. I thought that this pan might be earlier . My 68 survivors pan is different. Two small indents on the dip stick side were different than the one long and one short. It has a different bulge around the drain plug.68 L79 Convertible: Triple Black: Work In Progress, Body off. Now on!

Re: Correct 68 L79 Oil Pan
ALL 1968 Corvette small blocks used pan GM #3820000. Oil pan GM #360866 is a 1975+ SERVICE-only oil pan which is very similar to the 3820000 except that the front oil pan gasket radius is 1-3/8" instead of the 1-1/4" of the original pan. The 360866 is long-since discontinued but, as others have mentioned, Keen Parts does make an excellent reproduction of the 3820000.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Correct 68 L79 Oil Pan
I can't imagine why. All 1963-74 Corvette small blocks except 63-65 SHP with mechanical lifters, early 1970 LT-1 and 1970-72 ZR-1 used the GM #3820000. I have never noticed even the slightest difference among these oil pans.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

What is the 3956679 oil pan mentioned in Jeff's post? Is that the first replacement part number for the 3820000? My part number change books only go up to 1970.- Top

Re: Correct 68 L79 Oil Pan
As far as I can tell, no oil pan of GM #3956679 ever existed. As a matter of fact, I can't find that any part of GM #3956679 ever existed but if it did, it was never available in SERVICE. Of course, if it was never available in SERVICE it would be pretty tough to come up with that number. The GM #3820000 oil pan was discontinued in December, 1976 and replaced by the GM #360866. The latter was discontinued without supercession in March, 1999.
There was an "intermediate" replacement for the 3820001 "6 quart" oil pan, though. It was GM #3956670 which replaced the 3820001 in June, 1970. The 3956670 was discontinued in November, 1976 and replaced by the GM #359942 (with the 1-3/8" front seal radius). I do not know how the 3820001 differed from the 3956670. I would expect the only PRODUCTION applications for the 3956670 were early 1970 LT-1 and 1970-72 ZR-1.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

That's what I thought. I couldn't find 3956678 either. I wondered if the number was a typo in post #1 but, as you mention, that is the 6 quart pan, not the correct 5 quart.- Top

Re: Correct 68 L79 Oil Pan
I have a 69 s/b oil pan that came off a 350/300hp with 2 short ribs and a bulge in the bottom with the drain plug in the rear of the pan. I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I believe this was the original pan form an early 69. It needs to be cleaned and stripped, but it has no dents or damage. Re: Correct 68 L79 Oil Pan
I took a picture of the oil pan in my 68 L79 Survivor. In front of the drain plug there is a crease. Is this stock or did someone hit a rock ect? Thanks, JeffAttached Files68 L79 Convertible: Triple Black: Work In Progress, Body off. Now on!
