    Trailers for C2

After a fantastic national event, which was my first, I would like to get more active in NCRS events. I really enjoyed the Road Tour, also my first, and the 4200 miles round-trip seemed to go by fast. I did nothing but Sportsman and attend seminars, very much enjoyed that, and my wife learned to speak NCRS-ese, so she loved making many new friends, as did I (since we knew only the one person there from our chapter).

But now if I want to get back into Flight, enter a National, and finish the punch-list of items from the last regional (I did chapter and regionals in 2010, both close enough, 100 miles, to drive), I am going to have to trailer my non-A/C '67 coupe. That is something I have never done before, and really never wanted to before, as I like driving cars, but the many hundreds, or thousands of miles in July give me no other choice.

I am looking for recommendations from the experts here on a trailer, enclosed I think. I liked the Trailex one they had on display at the convention, but am not aware of other options, so any ideas are most welcome, thanks.

Search the archives, this has been discussed many times, but as with most things it is a matter of personal preference.

Thanks, that sounds interesting. I did search "trailers" , "C2 trailers", and "trailers C2" but found little except recommendations for Trailex.

Some of your decision making will be dependent on what you will use to pull the trailer. Trailex are great lightweight enclosed trailers and the price reflects that. For something in a lower price range I'd suggest a Serpent Express using an aluminum frame. http://www.serpentexpress.com/

Thanks, now that is an interesting option! I have a (don't hate me) F-150 SVT Raptor to pull it.

Also, how do you all feel about putting graphics on your trailers, like "NCRS" logos, Corvette, etc. I have heard they increase theft probabilities.

Nothing wrong with a F150, you'll be able to pull a good sized trailer if needed.
I would rather see something like, MIDWEST PITBULL REHABIITATION CENTER - KEEP YOUR DISTANCE on my trailer then anything that suggests there is a collector car in the trailer.

I have a friend that called a manufacture in Gerogia (I think) and said he was vacationing ing Florida and would be passing thru their area in a couple of weeks and wanted to pick up a 24' enclosed trailer and offered $4200. They sold it to him. I paid $5500 for mine at Carlisle several years before and thought I did well. His 24 footer looked awful nice to me. I got a slope nosed trailer that pulls well and is great for car hauling, but made it impossible to install cabinets in the front.

Many trailer manufacturers out there. Check them out on the web. A VERY IMPORTANT SPEC is the rating of the axles. That rating is GROSS WEIGHT and must include the trailer weight as well as the load. Therefore, if you purchase a trailer that weighs about 4000# empty and the load (car + goodies) weigh 4000#, an axle rating of 3500#X2 doesn't cut it. The weak link will be the tires. Also, make sure the trailer pulls "level"; if it is nose low/high, that puts undo weight strain on the corresponding tires as the rubber mounted axles do not compensate for this like a multi-point spring arrangement does.

Thanks for all the insights and info guys, I appreciate it. Now for more online research and phone calls......

I have a friend who tows his '65 Shelby GT350 in a trailer that says:"New England Pit Bull Rehabilitation Center", he claims that is the best graphic for a car trailer......

                      Hi Michael,
Welcome to the ncrs; since you said that you are new to "car hauling" my advice is to go to people that haul and chat with them.
Have them show you how to load and set tongue weight; maybe let you ride on a haul. I have pulled over 300 times and I prefer a 24 ft. beavertail with tailgate ramp, side exit, electric winch and electric ball crank. You can get use or new. I suggest you start with used as the learning experience will teach you much and you can trade up. As for as the Trailex, the cost is to much at 18K plus, and the narrow but HEAVY ramps to pull out and push in each time you load and the lack of head room, but you can spend more $ and buy headroom. (That is one mans opinion). You can get into car hauling for about 4K for used up into the area of 12K for new; the notion of logo on the side is your choice; in my hauls only one time has someone asked me "what's in the box"; I opened it and showed him. Good luck and have fun.
                      Dr. George

You need to inspect the quality of the cheap trailers. There are some out there that are downright scary, very thin materials, cheapest of everything they can find to install. Caveat emptor

A few of us have been around long enough to remember a certain maroon trailer that the side door fell off of and dumped Moma's clothes on the side of the road. Ole Doc Quack got to buy a new trailer after that

                          Mike,
Buy a trailer that will haul other things besides a C2. You never know what will follow you home. The point I am trying to make is there is no trailer difference in hauling a C2 or C3 or C4 or a C1 for that matter. Now if you want to haul one of my former police car Caprices you better have a large trailer with some good axles & tires on it. It is all about the gross weight, as Stephen said. Allow yourself some margin there. Being on the edge towing your Corvette is no fun.

Mike: Terry got a good point if you think you might haul other cars in the future. In my case I knew all I would ever haul was Corvettes and Camaro's.
That is why I spec it out to have a 7' tall tailer;18' in length; why would you have a real tall/long trailer if your never going to use the space? Beaver tail is nice and had
extra rings put in at the factory. Also make sure to get 4 doors on the trailer so straping down the car is easy. JMHO Larry
