Re: Help to ID a transmission tag on '63

I hear ya on the 100 lbs, John. I managed to squeeze under there and got a good look at my "AL" tag. Think mine was on the upper right bolt, but seems to me I've read somewhere yours is correct on lower left/forward bolt.

And I didnt see an 8 digit tag like LI offers (3839723W for my car) on my transmission. But I've seen these tags offered by vendors before, though I've not seen any mention of the "AL" tag Bob and I have. Thats why I was wondering if any one else knew what they mean. Does NCRS look for these tags? If so, I guess I should buy a 3839723W for my car.

HI Mel, Personally i never paid attention to the Transmission ID tags. I was surprised mine was on the car that I have owned for an eon.
I do know the number on the tag was just a couple of numbes or letters.
My 63 FI car has a3:70 rear end

What info should be on my tag. Late Febr chassis. Borg Warner of course.
My son is very tall and very thin. Maybe I will talk him into crawling under the car to check out the numbers and get back to you.

My 63 Borg Warner has the original ID tag. "AL". Not that difficult to read with a large mirror and flashlight.
So it appears that the Borg Warner transmission for our 63 has two letters only. The Muncies have a series of numbers. That info from Jorjorian and some of you have confirmed this.

Jorjorian. I thought my 63 had a 3;70 rear end. Maybe it doesn't. You said AL was for 4:11??? Yes I know you can look at the carrier case but I can't as no lift
So to repeat: Is AL for 4:11 only? Thanks, John

          John,
I never said AL code was only for 4.11.
I guessed that Mel's rear end ratio was 4.11.
The tag tells what the gear ratio is and the speedometer DRIVE gear is so
your ratio and Mels could be 3.70 since both 3.70 and 4.11 use the same drive gear.
