Help to ID a transmission tag on '63

Have 63 coupe 340hp 4 sp with BW T-10 Transmission, which is original to the car. Noticed a tag on transmission side cover plate, attached to upper right cover plate bolt, that has the letters "AL" stamped on it. Nothing else. Tag is about 1.5-2" long, and maybe 3/4" wide.

Any ideas on what this tag is or what the "AL" signifies?

Maybe tagged at a rebuild shop to identify the owner?

Guess it could be a tag from a rebuild. Just seems way too 'formal' for owner identification, and I dont recall seeing any references to a tag like this. I have spent time talking to most previous owners with no word of a tranny rebuild, but of course..anythings possible.

Harry.. I do have a pic. Will see if I can get it posted.

          Mel,
those tags are original. They were originally installed by Borg Warner when the transmission was assembled. I believe the tags started in 1962 with the choice of wide or close ratio gear sets. The tag is just a way to tell which gear ratio and speedo drive gear is inside. Bob

Jorjorian, So are you saying that ID tag should be on every restored 63 that has a Borg Warner? JD

John, I don't think he said that. From the research I've done I've only seen them on early 63's (don't know a cutoff). I believe they we're on T10's left over from the 62 run.

Harry, I have the T10 out of a 63 coupe 85xx car and I'll take a pic this afternoon of the tag if time permits. Bob

Well, of course, once change over made to Muncie's took place, that could have been the end of the tag.

                    Stu,
muncie 4 speeds had tags also.
As I remember the muncie tag carried a 7 digit part number of the complete transmission.Bob

Mel, looks like we have the same code T10 tag. This one is off a coupe I own in the 85xx range. I'm guessing the "AL" tag IDs a close ratio T10 transmission with the 4.11 speedometer drive gear. Hope this helps, Bob

Thnx Bob. Yes, thats exactly what mine looks like (VIN#72xx). But I've not seen "AL" listed in any publications as a valid internal gear indicator. Usually these are Q, R, S, T codes......unless I just missed it somewhere. And how did you determine the 4:11 drive gear?

Shouldn't take much effort to repro the nice tag you posted Jorjorian. Thanks for nice pic. JD

                            Mel,
I guessed on the ratio because my car had 4.11, which I think are original to the car.
You probably have a nice trans if the tag is still present.
Many people think a yellow paint slash on the side cover and center bearing support denotes close ratio.
The tag was still needed to tell what speedo drive gear was inside on the mainshaft. Bob

See section #32 in LI for transmission tags. They have them for 63 to 66.

Wonders never cease. My 63 is Early March car. I used a mirror and flashlight just now and had a hard time but I found out my 63 has the original tranny tag. "Its on the shift cover. Bottom left bolt (I think that's the bolt). Can't read it and the tag is bent up but it's original.
Would not be able to read the tag unless the car was on the lift or I lost a 100 lbs.
