I have 54 that has been in family since new. I am confused by the ATF choices available. I would appreciate any recommendations for a specific product appropriate for the car.

John;
I'll probably get criticized for this, but;
We use Dexron VI (synthetic) in most everything GM. Have very good transmission life with it. We live, most of the year, in Phoenix, AZ. One of the the most brutal places for transmissions with 300 degree under hood temps.
When you buy Dexron 6 by the case the price isn't to much more than than regular Dexron. Also you can mix 6 and regular Dexron.

I believe that most, if not all, fluids are backwards compatible. Type F would be appropriate for your car. I would avoid synthetic simply due to the propensity of synthetics to leak. Modern sealing technology works with synthetics but in 1954, the technology was woefully lackingDick Whittington- Top

Synthetic oil received a bad rap early on because "seal swell" was at a different rate than organic oils.
Formulas for synthetics were changed shortly after inception to address the situation.
Maybe we can get Duke to chime in here.And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
