1970 side vent trim

A friend has a 70 LT-1 and is about to paint his side vents. For clarification, is it correct on the 70 that the egg crate side grilles only show chrome on the horizontal bars and not the vertical bars? I know there was a running change in 71, but from what I read after searching a bit, 70's were painted except for the horizontal surfaces. A picture might help.

You are correct, the 70's only show chrome on the horizontal bars (and the most forward vertical front edge of the grille). It's not just the paint though, the 70's vertical edges are somewhat knife edge, while 71-72 are more square edged.
(The first photo appears like there is chrome on the verticals, these are just shadows. My verticals are plain white.)

The 1970 side grills do not have paint on the the vertical and horizontal trim. My own 71 LT-1, number 4,504 production date of 12/18/70 has one side with a 70 style and the other side with a 71 configuration. Note that inside the egg crates the paint is rough and has texture to it. Most restorations over polish this area.

Tell your friend to buy the 1970-72 Technical Information & Judging Guide (TIM&JG). These "features" are described in there. If he wants to do it right there are hundreds of other bits of information that will help him.

I did tell him about the NCRS and the TIM&JG. As you know some people just have this reluctance to join our ranks for whatever reason. Curiously when they need info this is the place to come.

I understand it is less expensive to post here than to buy the TIM&JG. And after all everything you read on the Internet is true, so it is better to post here. It is hard to get people to spend $30 or $50 when they have a car worth in the five or six figures. I have been down that road many times. You should be at the NCRS booth at Barrett-Jackson with all those high rollers.
