Re: 63 tachometer cable
Notice when the seller was asked to measure the length of the cable he didn't give the overall length but the length from the stop to the end of the cable..
Nice list of cables you have Alan. Can you email that to me please as I don't know how to copy it here. Thanks, JD- Top

Re: 63 tachometer cable
Alan,
Well maybe my memory serves me incorrectly. 1963's had gray casings for tachs and speedos. 1964's had white casings for speedos and I believe they had white for tachs. Then after 64 they were all black. All replacement cables were black also even to this day.

Re: 63 tachometer cable
Here is something I have wondered about for a long time. Applies to cables like the FI drive cable, speedometer cables, tach cables. etc.
It is very easy to shorten one of those cables a tad using your Dremel with a cuttin blade on it. No big deal as long as you have enough of the square part of the cable left over to go into a tach, etc.
Now for the question: What do you do after you cut the cable to keep it from coming apart? Unraveling would be a better word. Thanks, John- Top

Re: 63 tachometer cable
John, I have found that you can't stop the unraveling. The best way is to cut the gauge end and install a new stop.
I was out for a drive yesterday and the red part of the needle just broke off. I now have a 10 hour winter project to fix this.

Re: 63 tachometer cable
Harry, I miss-read your post and thought you were referring to the car itself unraveling, not just the cable.... as seen with your needle falling off, I actually tend to agree that you can't stop the "unraveling" of these 50-year-old cars.- Top

Mike, correct. The needle breaking off was just a side-note as you can never tell what is going to break or when?

Re: 63 tachometer cable
Loren,
Anyone can go to ANY Automotive Parts House Pep Boys, O'Rileys, Autozone etc. and ask for a speedometer repair kit. They will be handed all they need to replace the internal cable. You cut to length, crimp on the end and your done! Kit cost is under 20 bucks.

Re: 63 tachometer cable
Joe, Thank you. That is what I was looking for. I don't have an Advance Auto parts store near me. I ordered it, $9.09 plus a 15% discount for a total of $7.72 plus shipping. The shipping was more than the cable but that's OK. It's 83'' long. I only need 22'' so lots left over. Too bad the left over can't be used. Thanks everybody.- Top

Those speedo cable repair kits are almost always found in the "Help" section rotary displays.- Top
