    1969 Stamp Pad

My block is back from a rebuild, and this is a picture of the stamp pad. The builder said he cleaned the pad with a scotch brite pad, then taped it for painting. Here is a photo. It looks like the broach marks are ok, but there are some surface scratches there, maybe from the cleaning or tape removal. Also, the last digit in the VIN, I'm not sure why it looks smooth around the perimeter of the number, maybe some light sanding was done?

It's unfortunate that the rebuilder did that but, you'll be fine during judging.

Two comments: (1) Remember when the car is judged ONLY the originality side of the ledger is considered on the stamp pad--NOT condition and (2) consider using a tooth brush and paint remover on the Chevy orange that's down inside the stamped characters. On the first, some judges see scratches and presume they're the result of improper broaching vs. simple age + wear and tear. On the second, do it NOW before the engine has undergone heat/cool cycles and the paint is firmly set up.

Thanks Jack ....is the residual paint a cosmetic or judging issue? Also it was suggested that the pad could be aged... What is this?

              Roger,
Paint on the pad is a judging issue. The judging guide will say that the pad should be paint free.

I would not worry about it from what I can see. Paint is not a judging issue as it does not obscure surface or characters. Looks a lot better than many we have seen.

I thought that a little bit of paint inside the characters was TFP.

Not if the line workers followed instructions.

Wasn't the engine painted after the Tonawanda stamp?

You can get the red out of the letters with a Q-tip and paint remover...with care.

Certainly, and the instructions to the paint line were to cover that area to be free from paint.

Someone once posted a picture of the fixture that was used to cover that area during painting, but I can't remember if it was for Flint or Tonawanda -- but the results were supposed to be the same for each plant. Once the engines were painted blue the procedure changed, but that is another story.
