1961 270 hp w/ 2x4's have both tach and speedo needles bouncing heavily. Had speedo overhauled and now works. Had tach sent back to where last restored (before I owned car) they verified that tack was ok just needed new cable. did that and bounce stopped. BUT, after install now it registers about twice what I am doing as compared with my timing light and also dwell meter/tach combo. I understand they were not the most correct tach even when new. At idle timing light shows 900 and tach shows 2000. Obviously the engine is not doing 2000. What I do not know is whether or not I have the right generator in the car (has been replaced sometime in the past) and or pulley for that matter. For what it is worth I was going to put a new belt on the car as I was restoring it and the belt with correct number was too long and could not tighten properly so I continue to use the belt that was on it. Looking back that tells me that it could be that the pulley is too small therefore turning too fast and making tach register too fast. I looked at the generator drive mechanism on back of generator and it looks ok. I looked in parts catalogs and both Zip and Paragon show a pulley but not for F.I. or high lift cams. Is there a special generator and/or pulley for 270 hp w/ 2x4"s? Or am I overlooking something else?
