Need Help from those who purchased their Corvette New

Hello, I am currently doing my senior research project for one of my college classes. The topic is, of course, the Corvette. What better place to come to? Those of you who purchased your Corvette new from the dealership, I have some questions that I would like you to answer from me if you don't mind. All names will be kept out of report. If you would rather Private message me your response that is welcome.

Why did you chose to get a Corvette?

What year and options did you get?

    Final price of Corvette?

How old were you when you bought your Corvette?

How many other cars did you own at the time of you purchase?

Did you own a home at time or rent?

Were you limited in what you could buy/do as a result of buying your Corvette? (opportunity cost)

Annual Income at time of purchase?

    Married, Single, Children?

I know some of the questions are personal, please answer the ones you feel comfortable with. Again I am doing a report for college on the Corvette and need some data from all generations. Thank you

to help a new young member be successful in college, and also build his enthusiasum for the iconic American Sports Car, we'll make this thread a sticky for a week or so and see if he can gather some intel for his report.

ps, I didn't see any question asking for a 15 x 17" glossy mug shot......

        Q) Why did you chose to get a Corvette?
        A) Believed the story you never see an ugly girl in one…Later I found out that wasn’t exactly true. Seriously....I wanted one since I was six and rode in my cousins new '63 SWC.

        Q) What year and options did you get?
        A) 1976 Red Base L48 engine Automatic loaded with about everything else except cast aluminum. Ordered May 1976 took delivery in late June 1976.

        Q) Final price of Corvette?
        A) $8500

        Q) How old were you when you bought your Corvette?
        A) 19

Q)How many other cars did you own at the time of you purchase?
        A) 1967 Firebird Convertible, 1964 Pontiac GTO

        Q) Did you own a home at time or rent?
        A) Lived with folks.

        Q) Were you limited in what you could buy/do as a result of buying your Corvette? (opportunity cost)
        A) Probably.... Should have bought stock in Microsoft and that Cupertino, California Fruit Company.

        Q) Annual Income at time of purchase?
        A) $10K

        Q) Married, Single, Children?
        A) Single

I am happy to help, but would prefer an email from you Andy.

I assUme, as the others obviously have, you are asking about the first Corvette. You don't really say that in your questions.
I wrecked the first one in 6 weeks and 3800 miles. Let me know if you want to know about that one, the one I bought a year later (which I still have) or the 2008. ALL new cars from Chevrolet. NEW is the only way to go.

Hint from someone who spent four years in research as an occupation (at the time I bought the first two) -- limit your topic.

Re: Need Help from those who purchased their Corvette New

Loved Corvettes growing up (Route "66" era) First one was a '58 purchased from a private owner in late '66. Always wanted one and finally had my dad certain enough that I was going to make it thru college that he loaned me the $$ to buy it when I was about to start my Senior year of College. ($1300) First New one was 1974, bought new in late '73, (Sticker $7404, I bought at about 25% off) Was doing OK at work and had just got onto the GM employe "Plan" treated myself. New '84 bought in '83, replaced in '85 by a much better '85, About 20-30 Corvettes over the years, some new, most not, still have 3, '89. '65, '62.

Re: Need Help from those who purchased their Corvette New

Why did you chose to get a Corvette?

I wanted a L79 Nova and my wife wanted a Malibu; we compromised on a Corvette.

What year and options did you get?

1967 Sunfire yellow (wife again) coupe; L79 engine, 4 speed, 3.70 Posi, power brakes, leather interior, tinted glass, radio.

                  Final price of Corvette?

Stickered at $4995; paid $4130. $500 down and $163 per month for 2 years.

How old were you when you bought your Corvette?

24 and 11 months; the first month's insurance was a killer.

How many other cars did you own at the time.
                  or
Did you own a home at time or rent?

Had a '56 Ford Victoria; also had a '52 Ford 2Dr semi-custom. We rented an apartment.

Were you limited in what you could buy/do as a result of buying your Corvette? (opportunity cost)

                  Not really.

Annual Income at time of purchase?

                  Me, $6000, Wife $5400.

                  Married, Single, Children?

Married, no children at the time. My oldest daughter came home from the hospital in it in October 1968.

Re: Need Help from those who purchased their Corvette New

After riding in a doctors new 1954 Corvette age age 9 I knew I would own one someday. At age 22 I ordered a 1967 red with white interior 327, 4-speed, posi and a few other options with both tops and still own this car today! Traded in a '66 Chevelle and $2900.00 for the $4865.00 stickered Corvette. Payment was $103 a month.
Was single, rented and made $11,000 that year as a brakeman on the railroad. If you need to know what the Complete Auto Transport driver enroute to my dealership was eating for breakfast at the truck stop I can tell you.

                      Andrew -

This wasn't my first Corvette, but it was the first one I bought brand-new.

Had two Corvettes previously ('53 and '61), wanted a coupe.

                      '65 Coupe, 327/350hp 4-speed, 3.70 axle, radio, Glen Green paint, white/black 2-tone interior.

                      It was about $5200

I was 24 at the time.

Had two other daily drivers at the time.

                      Owned our home.

Buying the Corvette didn't limit doing anything else.

                      $8,400.00

                      Married, one child

(Car was stolen in 1970, never recovered)

My father bought a new '59 I will answer for him so you have some C1 input.
He was a fuel injection designer and wanted a production system to use for a comparison to his design fuel injection system.
He chose the Corvette over a fuel injected sedan because he didn't need a sedan, enjoyed driving sports cars, the engine is much easier to work on in a Corvette and the Corvette would be safer for high performance testing.

What year and options did you get?

1959, fuel injection, no radio (easier to work on engine with no shielding), 4 speed, posi 4.11:1, miscellaneous comfort

                        Final price of Corvette?

                        list $4889, discounted to $4049

no. It was a business expense.

Annual Income at time of purchase?

                        no idea

married, 3 kids. Oldest was 12 (now owns the car).

                          Hi Andrew,
Hope this helps…and the best of luck in nailing down an A+.
                          1) Had to have one after watching two seasons of Route 66.
                          2) It was in October,1961…the car was a new 1962 Corvette, 340 horse, four speed, positraction, off road exhaust, both tops…white with red interior.
                          3) $4884.00, including California sales tax.
                          4) 24.
                          5) A 1954 Ford, traded-in on the Vette for $659.00.
                          6) Rented.
                          7) Payments were $129.44 for 36 months…split rent on a two bedroom beach apartment with my roommate…just enough left over for beans and franks…and cheap Brown Derby beer from Safeways. Seemed plenty back then, though.
                          8) $500 per month.
                          9) Single.

Re: Need Help from those who purchased their Corvette New

This has been a wonderful resource! Thank you all so much for this wealth of information. It has been great getting Primary documentation for my paper.

Thank you all again, if there is more people who would like to contribute information the paper is not due for a few more weeks.
