Re: 72 Vapor Canister
Here's a link that might be useful for your rebuild. Not exactly the same but very helpful.

Re: 72 Vapor Canister
Yes there was the yellow tinted filter under the removable cap at the bottom that was replaceable but the charcoal was not a service item as other have stated. The cap also had a built in drain tube and a rubber hose. The charcoal was used to trap fuel vapor from the fuel tank the bottom filter was used to remove particles from the air. This would occur only when the engine was operating the incoming air would flow over the charcoal remove the fuel vapors then flow to the carburetor base and be burn in the engine. I think I remember an article I read a while back someone cut the canister at the bottom removed the charcoal and replaced it with charcoal he found at a pet fish supply store. He then glued the canister with an epoxy. I would not think the charcoal would ever wear out.
Also raw fuel in the vapor line would indicates the check valve at the fuel tank has failed.- Top

Raw fuel in the canister is also alleged (mostly by the EPA) to come from over filling the fuel tank. Perhaps I shouldn't speak so soon, but i have filled my fuel tanks to the vary top for years and never had an issue. I am ready for all of you who will tell me how lucky I am (yes, I play the lottery) and the sky is falling.Terry- Top

Re: 72 Vapor Canister
Those yellow filters used to (and may still) be commonly available at your FLAPS. I am sure there is both a GM & Delco short number for them, but then again time has moved on. I think I can bet on who has that answer.
