The wires vary by length, so try to keep 2000-3000 ohms per foot of length max. As to the rotor, I generally carry around an "old timer" and check for NORS items or look at some from Accel and similar high-perf outfits.

George, IIRC there is a bushing pressed in the upper housing that can be adjusted to eliminate that up and down play. Pull out your mainshaft and press bushing up in housing.

        Okay, some good news.
Installed another 914 distributor and things are much better-----starts hot and cold, idles hot and cold, does not "break-up" at any rpm during test drives, and pulls/runs pretty good through all RPM ranges and WOT. Not perfect, but much, much better.
Working on distributor "dial-in" procedures now(Duke's article)
Thinking that next step is some Dyno time to find best air/fuel ratios through all rpm ranges under load. I will likely need some guidance in order to have a good Dyno session.

Once again, many, many thanks to all who have been so generous with their time and knowledge.

        Cautiously optimistic,
