    1966 Transmission Mount

My 66 is a July 66 build. My shifter is mounted to the transmission, but I believe it was supposed to have the frame bracket mounting. I realize that someone could have changed it in the past 47 years.

Looking at how it seems the shifter mount bracket attaches, it looks like it attaches in the front of the crossmember by one of the bolts that also holds the transmission support bracket. On the back side of the crossmember it looks like there should be a threaded hole in the crossmember or something. I haven't found a good picture yet, but was looking at the AIM.

There is not a hole, threaded or otherwise in my crossmember where it would seem that the bracket should attach.

Is there supposed to be a hole in the back side of the crossmember for the shifter bracket to mount to?

    Thanks,

    Don

    hi Donald,
there should be 2 holes on the rear of the crossmember. i believe it was a late march switch to the frame mounted shifter. i hope this helps you.
    take care,
    Matt

great picture and clearly shows the bracket. So now I'm wondering what the deal is with my July 66 car? I suppose the frame could have been replaced at some point in time.

      Thanks,

It seems very late to me for a transmission mounted shifter. However, if it was a bracket mount, there should be the holes on the frame you mention. No way around that. Now might be a good time to check your frame VIN derivative.

Yep, I agree. That's what I will check next.

OK, I'm looking for the VIN on the frame. Found a reference in the archive that for my 66 it should be back near the rear body mount. If that is the case, then it should be somewhere near the rear crossmember. I've scraped the crud off the top of the frame rail in that area, and further forward above where the shock tower is located. Haven't found the VIN. The ones I have seen on bare frames have been close to the outside edge of the frame rail.

Am I looking in the right place?

            Thanks,
            Don

              Don -

On a '66, I'd expect to find it on the top surface of the frame rail, about 1/4" in from the outer edge, directly above the forward edge of the #4 body mount frame bracket. See photo below.

Most folks do not realize how fragile original stampings may be. I would strongly advise against scraping, or any other abrasive/corrosive attempt to clean and view OEM surfaces.
