I'd be looking for a 3846429 casting number on the tailhousing. I'll try to upload a couple of pictures '65 used the 325 main case with the '429 tailhousing , pass side speedo hookup rather than the drivers side arrangement used in '63-64 as I recall.

3857584 is the tail housing with the hole on the RIGHT side for speedo fitting (65-70) and 3978764 is the 71-74 tail housing with the speedo hole also on the right side.
The 3831731 tail housing (NO reinforcing rib along the bottom) was only used on 63 Muncies and the 3846429 came along later and used in 64. Both had the speedo hole on the LEFT side.
There seems to be a lot of debate/disagreement as to when and/or whether or not the 3846429 was used in early 65 cars, AND, whether or not it was used on any Vettes. Several of the 65 Chevelle owners claim that their early production 65 cars-----------------WITH AN ORIGINAL MUNCIE--------------------have 429 tail housings.
Personally, I DO NOT LIKE the 429 tail housing because accessing the speedo fitting in the car is difficult and because the plastic speedo gear can easily fall back into the tail housing when removing the speedo fitting. Consequently, EVERY 4sp car that I own has a 584 tail housing!

I don't like it either, but for a correct restoration of a '63-64 you need one...

I don't do correct, numbers matching. I do practical functionality. Works Soooooooooooooo much better.
For example, a SB400 in my 56 with a Muncie (everything is a 100% bolt-in) works soooooooooooo much better than an ole 265/NON-syncro 3sp. And it's more enjoyable.

Dave, I have a muncie with a P7B137 stamping. The case is an 010 without a VIN stamping although it did come out of 67 Corvette. Scott

Years ago I had a 1967 Corvette Muncie case with a "3885010" casting number and stamped date code "P7B137" (Muncie, 1967, Feb. 13th, with only the top half of the last number "7" which I no clue of its meaning except possibly a mistake). The partial VIN was "7S113122" where "S" = St. Louis. I bought the case at a swap meet in Taunton, MA, in June 1989.

              Scott,

Can you only see the top half of the number 7 (which must be a stamping mistake) after the number 3 on the "P7B137" stamping? The transmissions were obviously stamped on the same day and probably by the same person. Are the last 5 digits of the VIN on the 67 Corvette somewhere between 12,000 and 14,000?

Dave, that is correct the 7 is only partially stamped as you describe. The case does not have a VIN of any kind. Just a P number. I will find out the VIN of the 67 it did come out of though, just for fun. Scott
