I have an early 1968 427 and wanted to ensure I was reading the TJM correctly. Is the foam collar installed on the bell housing? Thanks if you can confirm for me.

In 1969> it was glued to the bell housing before body drop. 1968 ... well who knows? Have you looked in your copy of the 1968 AIM?Terry- Top

By the way, while the shields were not originally used on 1968 Corvettes and would therefore not be correct for a 1968, you could install one if you wanted to improve heat insulation for the passenger compartment. You can be sure that GM did not add these for 1969 because the 1968-without-shield design worked just as well.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1968 Transmission Foam Collar Insulation
Joe,
Are you talking about the foil/insulation that goes in the transmission tunnel? If so, my Dec 67 built 68 had that type of material and had clips to hold it in place.
Maybe we are talking about two different things.

Yes, two different pieces. The foil-backed tunnel insulation was used on 1968's. The piece were are referring to here was a rather large foam rubber collar which installed on the bellhousing and and sealed against the forward portion of the tunnel (forward of the foil-backed insulation). This foam rubber shield helped prevent engine compartment heated air from getting to the forward portion of the tunnel area (and thence radiating into the passenger compartment). In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1968 Transmission Foam Collar Insulation
The foam was missing on my 69. Reduced interior temps quite a bit after I replaced it. Some 69's also have a large foil covered fiberglass insulation under the body of the passenger compartment on the side of the transmission. I bought a set of the foil to put on my car but I didnt have any of the studs so I left it off.

This foam shield is subject to deterioration and, after a period of time, it can just more-or-less "disappear". So, it may be that it was once present on your car but was long-gone by the time you looked for it.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1968 Transmission Foam Collar Insulation
In my opinion and with respect to the kind of heat insulation we're talking about here, there is just about zero chance that it's going to have any negative implications, at all.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1968 Transmission Foam Collar Insulation
Hi Henry, long time no see. When you installed the collar, was the engine and trans out of the car or did you slip it on from above through the firewall or from below?

Re: 1968 Transmission Foam Collar Insulation
My early 68 BB vette with a turbo 400 trans had the foam collar. There was adhesive left on the top of the trans housing. The foam doesn't last. I'm not sure if a standard trans would be different.- Top
