    Got around to removing the carpet and did find the N14 and the job number 488 that is present on the passenger side floor pan and behind the gas tank.

      Actually, one of the accepted definitions comes from the late 19th-early 20th century about going to Mexico to elude capture or arrest. You will hear this used in many, many westerns and civil war films. Once you were there you were then "south of the border" or otherwise lost or inaccessible. The roots of this expression are geographical, as you suggest (just futher south). However, the most usage today is with respect to what Dick said, meaing that it is going away, being lost, or diminishing.
