'64 conv. vent window regulator removal procedure

    Hello,
Can anyone offer advice on how to properly disconnect the vent window regulator from the window frame shaft? After removing the shaft to regulator pinch bolt and the 3 screws attaching the regulator to the frame, mine is now loose; but the regulator will not slide all the way down the shaft to disengage it. There appears to be a special, rectangular spring clip in the top of the die-cast regulator collar between the shaft and the collar where the shaft engages it. The clip is not mentioned in the service manual, and there does not appear to be a way to remove it. Perhaps it's just a spacer to take up any rotational looseness between the regulator die cast collar and the shaft, or is it some sort of locking device? I don't want to start prying on the slotted die cast collar or pounding on it for fear of breaking it (it appears to be very fragile, and no one is reproducing it). I'm not planning on rebuilding the regulator, just removing it so I can change the vent glass.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jeff H.

Re: '64 conv. vent window regulator removal procedure

I removed my vent window regulators a while back and I can't remeber exactually what it entailed. I was removing all my channels to replace the weather stripping. I belieeed that I had to loosen the front channel at the bottom of the door to get sufficient play to get the regulator out. The clip I believe you are referring to is only harden metal to screw the attachement bolt. Its not holding the regulator from sliding off the shaft. It might be a little sticky, but not holing it on.

Looking in my '63 - '64 Shop Manual, it states in item 3 to remove the vent assembly lower mounting nut form stud and puch stud through inneer panel. This area is confusing. I believe that I just needed to be able to move the front chanel to get the assembly out of the pocket in the door panel.

Hopefully someone else with better memory will reply.

Thanks Dale. I followed your advice / experience and finally got the regulator off the vent window "T" shaft. It was a struggle, but I didn't break anything. I did find a thin metal clip around the base of the "T" shaft. After removing it (hard to get it out) with a needle-nose pliers, the shaft to collar fit became much looser but still not enough for the 2 pieces to separate. After much "coaxing" with a small hammer & punch, it came apart. I also found the end of the "T" shaft around the slot to be deformed from the "squeeze" applied by the pinch bolt. That was the "thing" that was preventing easier removal.
      Thanks again.
      Jeff

Jeff, Thats great, sorry I could remember better. I know that I was removing both the vent window and side window, so I was just taking it all out. My left side regulator had the back pushed off and letting the shaft push out the back. I did get new gears becuase they were stripped. I also go a variety of spaces and really have tight vent cranks now. Came out really great. Hope your project workd out as well. Dale
