    Re: C5 Ice removal

We started using Propylene glycol in the 90,s due it lower environmental impact and low or no effect on animal life. It was heated to 250Deg F then sprayed on all aircraft surfaces to remove ice and snow. If there was still precipitation falling after the deicing procedure we would the apply a product know as type 4 ( first was type 2 then 3 each with a longer hold time) anti-icing it is like glycol but it has a thickening agent add to it called pseudoplastic making it cling to the surface it is applied to. Which should only be aerodynamic surfaces it add a hold over time before the plane would need to be deiced again due to snow or ice build up. On takeoff roll the aerodynamic wind shear would then cause the type 4 fluid to shear off the wing or any aerodynamic surface.

As far as your predicament if you had a large tent or canopy you could place it over the car and the introduce heat from a source to help it deice. For many years they were talking about using infrared heater to remove the snow from aircraft but never happened as of yet.

If you use the hair drier don't get it too close to the body.) After that step I would apply glycerin to the weather stripping and then coat them with baby powder to prevent the stripping freezing to the body next time.

An application of silicone to the weatherstrip during fall will keep the ice off the weatherstrip all winter long. I do this to all the DD and have no access issues during the winter. I also apply Rejex to the windows and car body of the BC/CC cars. It eases the snow and ice removal, and aids water removal during rains better than RainX.

Painters do not like the silicone. One of the DDs needed some touch up work and the painter complained the masking tape would not stick to the weatherstrip.

Terry, the silicone is a good idea, and much quicker to apply than glycerin and baby powder. See you next week down huhyair in the Texas gayroj.

Pouring ethylene glycol on the ground will get you a $10,000 fine per occurance, if you're caught. It is a listed hazardous waste under CFR 40, Part 264. This is a Federal rule and applies to all 50 States. Larry noted the reason for this.

I wonder if that also applies to Europe?

Rob, I'm not sure about The Netherlands. I've done quite a lot of work in Sweden and in Germany and in general, their laws are more lax than in the U.S. However, this is a health issue so I would think that there are some restrictions for handling this material.

All my cars are Vettes so what else should I drive?
