Not to be a smart ass but how about a warm garage? I took my '01 Z out of the garage once on ice. I couldn't get it out of the driveway. With big tires I don't see how anyone can drive a C5 or C6 in cold snowy weather. Rob, I applaud you for trying, you're a braver man than I.

My nephew thought he would be a big help and try to remove the ice off of my brother-in-law's car, with a hammer. Watch out.

Those airplane deicers use heated Ethelyn Glycol. I am sure that is not cheap -- oh and I doubt there will be any foliage growing around the driveway in the spring. Good luck.

Or any cats, dogs, or other wildlife in the neighborhood............... Intake/drinking of the EG solution will likely result in organ (kidney) failure.

                  Larry

PS: In the chemical plants where I worked, we made EG for antifreeze and polyester fiber. Some of the older supervisors used to taste/sample the EG to modify their operating conditions rather than wait for the lab results.

                  They're all gone now.

I don't thing Ethylene Glycol is a selective herbicide, but Paul O will know more about that than I would.

                        Rob-

As a Canadian, I assure you that there is a sure-fire cure for your plight. It's called 'spring'. In the old days, this started in early July for us but with the clever invention of global warming, we now bask in it's warmth as early as late June.

Not knowing your driving intentions, when I experience freezing rain that makes my Monte's doors frozen shut and ice on the windshield I pour cold tap water from the house around the door and on the windshield. The door will open and the water on the windshield makes scraping easier. Corvettes are in the garage.

Garden hose-preferably hooked up to warm water.

Rob, I grew up in the north and had this problem all too frequently, lived in apartments, I used the water method and in later years I used a hair drier to melt the ice. After you melt it wipe down the weather stripping and jambs to assure they are dry. (The water usually worked faster than the hair drier. If you use the hair drier don't get it too close to the body.) After that step I would apply glycerin to the weather stripping and then coat them with baby powder to prevent the stripping freezing to the body next time.
