Re: Exhaust blackout, help me understand!
This process of blacked out mufflers was even carried over to the C4s. Some C4s have the mufflers blacked out from the factory. Others dont. I believe all 84s did not but some where down the road newer C4s had them blacked. I think all C3s were left natural?- Top

Re: Exhaust blackout, help me understand!
My wife's 1985 built Feb 85 had the mufflers blacked out. Plus as Terry has stated all 68-72 and I am sure 73 had the mufflers blacked out but some time before 1978 not sure when the black out process ended. My assumption would be when the larger flexible rear bumper covered or hid the mufflers. Also the muffler black out on C3 I believe was applied before it was installed to the chassis whether this was done at St. Louis or at Walker I do not know. We do see but not on every car black paint on a small area of the spare tire tub near the muffler. My next assumption is this happened when the muffler was touched up due paint scratch off during transport or just missing black out part of QA. Hopefully John Hinckley will chime in if my assumptions are correct or not.

Muffler blackout overspray on the sides of the spare tire tub was common on '63-'68, but I can't speak to the process after that time - I left St. Louis in early '68, and never returned.- Top

Re: Exhaust blackout, help me understand!
I know and understand why the judges want to see the blacking out of the exhaust. I guess this was part of the underbody blackout procedure at the factory on the assembly line. My confusion is if the judges want to see evidence of the underbody blackout then wouldn't it be obvious that the assembly line worker, while blacking out the exhaust would also have black overspray on the floor around the exhaust? You know they didn't tape up the floor before shooting the paint. Every Top Flight car that I see has the exhaust painted black but no overspray on the floor around it. Please explain how this process of restoration gets full credit although we should all know that the factory didn't take the time to cover up the underbody floor. Wouldn't/shouldn't this be just as much of grounds for deduction as no painted exhaust? Both methods are obviously signs of over-restoration, right?
My understanding is on c1 they used paint mittens- Top

I see that this is your first post on the TDB, so you probably haven't had the benefit of the many past years of discussion on the (bogus) "mitting" legend; if you do a search on "mitting" as the keyword, you'll have plenty of entertaining reading. "Mitting" never happened.- Top

Wow,
Now I'm really confussed I am in prosses of trying to restore a 1959 and I have been told the NCRS technical is a guidline. The statement I made about the mittens came from that manual. Help me understand.
Thank you

Re: Exhaust blackout, help me understand!
The manual, if it says mitted, is completely incorrect.

Re: Exhaust blackout, help me understand!
I understand that the mitt application has been completely debunked, but the 58-60 TIM & JG does state on page 84 'Mufflers and pipes were painted black which was sloppily applied with a "painting mitt" from the bottom side.'
Cliff, this will not be the first inconsistancy you run into doing your restoration.

This was also mentioned in Noland Adams' C2 book, further adding to the confusion.- Top
